Description

Quinta Agua Alta Ruby Reserve is a vibrant, fruit-driven Port that captures the steep, sun-drenched slopes of the Douro in a glass. Crafted as a Ruby Reserve, it offers more depth, concentration and finesse than a standard Ruby Port, while remaining wonderfully approachable and generous. Drawing on old-vine fruit and generations of know-how, it blends traditional Douro character with a modern, polished style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Ruby Reserve shows a deep, opaque ruby colour with purple highlights at the rim, signalling both youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and inviting, with aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plums and crushed blueberries layered with notes of violets, cocoa, sweet spice and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied yet surprisingly fresh, with succulent dark berry and cherry flavours framed by fine, velvety tannins. Hints of chocolate, black pepper and dried herbs add complexity, leading into a long, warming finish typical of quality Port. The balance of sweetness, fruit and structure makes it delicious upon release, but it also has the potential to evolve for several years in bottle, gaining further complexity while preserving its core of vibrant fruit.

Production
Perched high on the steep, schistous slopes of the Douro, Quinta Da Agua Alta benefits from poor, stony soils, excellent drainage and dramatic day–night temperature swings that concentrate flavour in the grapes. The vineyards are planted to classic Douro varieties—Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca—carefully harvested by hand on terraces where machinery cannot reach. Only the best bunches are selected, then traditionally vinified with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and aromatic intensity. The young wine is fortified with high-quality grape spirit to halt fermentation and retain natural sweetness, before being matured in the cellar to achieve the extra depth and harmony required of a Ruby Reserve.

Food & Serving
This Ruby Reserve is a versatile after-dinner companion, pairing beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, chocolate fondant, brownies, or flourless chocolate cake, as well as berry tarts and black forest gâteau. It also works wonderfully with blue cheeses like Stilton or Danish blue, aged hard cheeses, and even a plate of roasted nuts and dried fruits. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C, to keep the sweetness in balance and the fruit lifted. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving can help the aromatics open up fully, especially if the bottle has been stored for some years.

Producer
Quinta Da Agua Alta can trace its roots at least back to 1838, its name reflecting the estate’s lofty position high on the Douro’s steep hillsides where roads become too narrow for trucks and most work is still done by hand. For generations, the Borges family supplied grapes and wines to some of the major Port houses, quietly contributing to the region’s reputation. In recent years, a new chapter began when the family decided to bottle under their own name, allowing them to express their estate’s unique terroir and personal style. Today, the quinta is led by the young siblings Louisa and Maria Borges: Maria oversees administration and marketing, while Louisa—trained at some of the Douro’s leading houses—crafts the wines. Under their stewardship, Quinta Da Agua Alta has gained awards and growing recognition, emerging as one of the Douro’s promising quality-driven, independent producers.
