Description
Quinta Agua Alta 10 Years Tawny is a beautifully mature port that captures the elegance and warmth of the Douro Valley in every glass. Aged for an average of ten years in seasoned oak, it offers the complexity and finesse that tawny port lovers seek, while still retaining a vibrant core of fruit. This wine is a testament to the Borges family’s decision to bottle under their own label, allowing their distinctive style and high standards to shine through.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 10 Years Tawny shows a luminous amber-brown color with copper and golden highlights at the rim, reflecting its decade of patient aging in wood. The nose is inviting and layered, with aromas of dried figs, dates, and orange peel, supported by notes of toasted almonds, caramel, vanilla, and a subtle hint of spice and oak polish.
On the palate, it is silky and medium-bodied, with a harmonious balance between mellow sweetness and a fresh, lifted acidity. Flavors of dried stone fruits, nut brittle, toffee, and baking spices unfold gradually, finishing with a long, warming aftertaste of roasted nuts and citrus zest. The integration of fruit, oak, and oxidative character is seamless, making it both easy to drink and quietly sophisticated. This is a wine that is drinking beautifully now and, while 10-year tawnies are released ready to enjoy, it will comfortably hold and maintain its character for several more years when stored correctly.
Production
Quinta Agua Alta is perched high on the steep, schistous slopes of the Douro, in vineyards so elevated and narrow that trucks can no longer pass—hence the name ‘Agua Alta.’ These terraces, with poor, stony soils and marked temperature swings between day and night, naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor in the grapes. Traditional Douro varieties—Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca—are harvested by hand on the demanding slopes, ensuring only the best bunches are selected. After fermentation, which is typically interrupted with high-quality grape spirit to preserve natural sweetness, the young port is transferred to seasoned oak casks, where it slowly evolves over an average of ten years. Over this time, controlled oxidation and gentle evaporation refine the wine’s color, texture, and aromatic complexity, culminating in a balanced and expressive 10-year-old tawny blend.
Food & Serving
Quinta Agua Alta 10 Years Tawny is an excellent partner for classic desserts such as crème brûlée, pecan pie, almond tart, and pastel de nata, as well as blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort, and aged hard cheeses like Manchego or São Jorge. It also works beautifully as a contemplative after-dinner glass on its own, or alongside roasted nuts and dried fruit. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is generally not necessary for a 10-year tawny, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the aromas to fully blossom.
Producer
Agua Alta can be traced back at least to 1838, with the estate’s dramatic position high on the Douro’s steep slopes shaping both its name and its wines. For generations, the Borges family supplied grapes and wines to the major Port houses, honing their craft behind the scenes. In more recent years they chose to bottle under their own label, Quinta Agua Alta, giving them the freedom to express their terroir and family style directly. Today, the estate is led by the young sister duo Maria and Louisa Borges: Maria oversees administration and marketing, while Louisa, trained at some of the Douro’s most prestigious houses, is the winemaker. Under their stewardship, Quinta Agua Alta has begun to garner awards and significant critical recognition, marking it as one of the Douro’s rising boutique producers and a name to watch in premium, estate-bottled Port.
