Description

Quarts de Chaume by Château de Plaisance is a rare Loire sweet wine made from Chenin Blanc in one of the region’s most prized appellations. The 2018 vintage offers the concentration and finesse collectors look for, combining botrytis-driven richness with the lively acidity that makes this style so compelling.

Tasting Notes
Pale gold to deep amber in the glass, depending on age and serving temperature, with a luminous sheen that hints at its richness. The nose typically opens with layers of ripe apricot, quince, honey, candied citrus, white flowers, and subtle saffron or spice notes. On the palate it is concentrated yet precise, with luscious sweetness balanced by the fresh, mineral-driven acidity that Chenin Blanc is known for. Expect a silky texture, excellent depth, and a long, elegant finish that can carry notes of marmalade, baked pear, and crushed stone. Quarts de Chaume has strong aging potential, and the 2018 vintage should develop beautifully over many years, gaining complexity and showing more nutty, honeyed, and dried-fruit nuances with time.

Production
Quarts de Chaume sits on steep Loire slopes with schist, sandstone, and quartz-rich soils that help Chenin Blanc achieve both ripeness and tension. The grapes are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes, selecting berries affected by noble rot when conditions allow, which concentrates sugar, flavor, and acidity. Vinification is usually slow and careful to preserve purity and balance, allowing the wine to express both the terroir and the natural complexity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 8-10°C, to keep the sweetness in balance and highlight the wine’s freshness. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit tarts, quince desserts, and dishes featuring sweet-and-savory elements such as roast poultry with stone fruits or lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Decanting is not usually necessary for a young bottle, but it can be helpful for older vintages to open up their aromatic layers.

Producer
Château de Plaisance is a respected Loire producer known for wines that emphasize precision, terroir expression, and the character of Chenin Blanc. The estate has built a strong reputation in the region for crafting expressive wines from some of the Loire’s most distinguished sites. Its work in Quarts de Chaume reflects the appellation’s long-standing prestige as one of the benchmark sweet wine terroirs of France.

In sommelier circles, many speak highly of this gem. Top-class Chenin Blanc. Winemaker Vanessa Cherruau has no traditional background in wine, but fell for wine at a tasting. She changed course and in time took over an organic domaine, learning along the way. Her wines are moving, dry, energetic and lively. One of the most exciting projects in France today
