Puglia POP, Fico Susumaniello 2022

Puglia POP Fico Susumaniello 2022 is a distinctive red wine made from the rare Susumaniello grape, an ancient variety found almost exclusively in Salento, in the heart of Puglia. It combines regional character with a modern, thoughtful presentation, offering a wine that feels both deeply rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a beautiful ruby-red color. The bouquet is refined and expressive, with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, and cherry layered with fresh spice and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, the wine is beautifully structured and well balanced, with generous fruit, subtle oak influence, and a long, elegant finish. The 2022 vintage already shows impressive harmony, and its depth suggests it will continue to develop nicely over the next few years.

Production
The grapes are harvested by hand in October and transported in boxes to preserve their quality before pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 3 to 5 weeks of skin maceration to extract color, aroma, and structure. The wine is then aged in 440-liter clay amphorae and matured for a further six months in 10-hectoliter barrels of American and French oak, creating a layered wine that reflects both terroir and careful winemaking.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs well with rich Mediterranean dishes, grilled or roasted meats, braised lamb, and hearty pasta with tomato-based sauces. It is best served slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and does not require decanting, although a short time in the glass will help the aromas open up.
