Description

PSI 2023 Magnum from Dominio de Pingus brings the vision of Peter Sisseck to a more approachable, shareable format, without compromising on depth or character. Crafted from old-vine Tempranillo and Grenache in Castilla y León, this is a refined yet generous Ribera del Duero-style red that captures the soul of the region in a magnum built for the table. Aged in used Pingus barrels, it offers a remarkable intersection of pedigree, drinkability and value. Conceived as Sisseck’s tribute to the traditional growers of Ribera del Duero, PSI has quickly become a modern benchmark for balanced, terroir-driven Spanish red.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, PSI 2023 Magnum shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple rim, reflecting its energy and freshness. The nose is expressive and pure, opening with black cherries, ripe red berries and plums, layered with notes of dried herbs, violets and subtle spice. Hints of licorice, graphite, cracked pepper and a touch of well-integrated, old-oak character give added complexity without overshadowing the fruit. On the palate, this is supple and medium to full-bodied, with a core of juicy dark and red fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and invigorating acidity. The Tempranillo brings structure, dark fruit and a sense of gravitas, while the Grenache lifts the blend with red-fruited brightness and spice. Savory undertones of tobacco leaf, dried flowers and a stony minerality flow into a long, balanced finish. In magnum, the 2023 vintage should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and silkiness, though it can easily be enjoyed in its youth after a proper decant.

Production
PSI is sourced from old bush vines across selected parcels in Castilla y León, particularly within Ribera del Duero, where altitude, poor calcareous and clay-limestone soils, and continental climate (hot days, cool nights) naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, with a strong emphasis on reviving and preserving traditional, low-intervention viticulture. In the cellar, Tempranillo and Grenache are vinified with a focus on gentle extraction to emphasize fragrance and finesse over sheer power. The wine is then matured for around 18 months in used barrels previously employed for Pingus, allowing it to gain texture and polish without heavy new-oak imprint, resulting in a wine that speaks clearly of place and old vines.

Food & Serving
PSI 2023 Magnum is a versatile food wine that shines with hearty, flavor-packed dishes. Think roast or grilled lamb, Iberico pork, chorizo and other charcuterie, slow-braised beef, or wood-fired vegetables with herbs and olive oil. It also pairs beautifully with aged Manchego, hard sheep’s cheeses, and rustic tapas spreads. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic lift. For current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to let the young fruit and spice unfurl; in maturity, a shorter decant will be enough to remove sediment and open up the bouquet.

Producer
Dominio de Pingus was founded by Danish-born winemaker Peter Sisseck, who first fell in love with wine as a teenager working on his uncle’s estate in Bordeaux. After arriving in Spain in the 1990s and recognizing the extraordinary potential of old Tempranillo vines in Ribera del Duero, he created Pingus, which rapidly attained cult status and was hailed as one of Spain’s greatest wines, regularly earning top scores from international critics. From this foundation, Sisseck expanded his vision with wines like Flor de Pingus and PSI, aimed at both preserving ancient vineyards and making the region’s unique character more accessible. Today, Dominio de Pingus is regarded as one of the leading lights of Castilla y León, known for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and a philosophy that marries traditional Spanish viticulture with a Burgundian-like focus on terroir and finesse.
