Description

Prunotto Barolo Serra 2020 is a single-vineyard style expression that captures the firm, powerful character of the soils south of Serralunga d’Alba. This is Barolo in a decidedly classic mold: structured, deeply etched Nebbiolo with the kind of tannic backbone that promises long, graceful aging. Crafted by Prunotto under the stewardship of the Antinori family, Serra stands out as one of the estate’s most age-worthy and distinctive crus.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Prunotto Barolo Serra 2020 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is finely layered: aromas of ripe red cherry and wild raspberry mingle with rose petals, dried violets, blood orange zest, and hints of licorice. With air, more complex tones emerge—tar, sweet tobacco, dried herbs, and a subtle mineral edge recalling iron and wet stone. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet precise, with a focused, linear attack that opens onto intense red fruit, savory spice, and a distinct earthy, ferrous note. The tannins are firm, chalky, and authoritative—very much in the Serralunga style—but polished and well-integrated, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and energetic. The finish is long and complex, lingering with notes of dark cherry, rose, and spice. Built for the long haul, this 2020 has excellent aging potential: it will begin to show more tertiary nuance after 6–8 years in bottle and can comfortably evolve for 15–20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Serra comes from vineyards located south of Serralunga d’Alba, in one of Barolo’s most prized zones, where compact calcareous-clay and marl soils give Nebbiolo its hallmark power and depth. The elevated position and good diurnal range help preserve aromatics and freshness while fostering slow, complete ripening. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal maturity to allow for strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with an extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged—traditionally in large oak casks (with some possible use of smaller barrels depending on the vintage)—for around two years, followed by additional bottle aging before release, allowing the structure to knit together and the cru’s distinctive character to emerge.

Food & Serving
This Barolo’s structure and depth make it a natural partner for rich, savory dishes. Think braised beef or veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked lamb shoulder, game birds, or classic Piemontese specialties such as brasato al Barolo and tajarin pasta with truffle or wild mushroom ragù. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F), ideally in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to let the aromatics fully unfold. Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours for younger bottles like the 2020—to soften the tannins and bring out the wine’s floral and spicy complexity.

Producer
Prunotto is one of Piedmont’s historic names, founded in the early 20th century and long recognized for its pioneering role in bottling and promoting single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco. Since the 1990s, the estate has been under the ownership and guidance of the Antinori family, one of Italy’s most influential wine dynasties, who have invested heavily in vineyard management and modern, quality-focused winemaking. Based in Alba and working with prime sites across the Langhe, Prunotto has become a benchmark for elegantly crafted, terroir-driven Nebbiolo. The Serra bottling underscores the estate’s commitment to expressing the individuality of specific zones within Barolo, and it regularly earns strong critical acclaim for its combination of power, precision, and aging capacity.
