Description

Prunotto Barolo Magnum 2020 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected names, presented in an impressive large format ideal for the table or the cellar. This Barolo brings together Prunotto’s traditional roots and Antinori’s modern precision, resulting in a wine that is both authentic and finely polished. The 2020 vintage showcases Barolo’s hallmark structure and perfume in a style that is approachable in its youth yet built to age gracefully.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections toward the rim, a typical and reassuring sign of Nebbiolo. The nose opens with pure, lifted aromas of rose petals and violets, followed by red cherries, wild strawberries, and pomegranate. With air, more complex notes emerge: dried herbs, licorice, anise, subtle tar, and a light balsamic edge, all wrapped in a refined touch of oak spice. On the palate, Prunotto Barolo 2020 is medium to full-bodied, with finely etched tannins that are firm yet polished, giving the wine its classic Barolo backbone without feeling austere. Flavors of juicy red cherry, cranberry, and raspberry interplay with notes of dried roses, sweet tobacco, leather, and a hint of truffle and spice. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, stretching the wine into a long, layered finish. In magnum format, this wine has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now after proper aeration for its youthful fruit and energy, but will develop greater complexity and tertiary notes over the next 10–20 years, and likely beyond.

Production
Prunotto’s Barolo is sourced from select vineyards in the heart of the Barolo appellation, where Nebbiolo thrives on a mosaic of calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils that lend both structure and aromatic finesse. The continental climate of Piemonte, with warm days and cool nights, allows for slow, even ripening and the preservation of Nebbiolo’s hallmark acidity and perfume. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the must undergoes a controlled fermentation with maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aromatics, followed by an extended maturation period in large oak casks and/or seasoned barrels. This traditional approach respects the character of the grape and terroir, while subtle modern refinements ensure purity, balance, and elegance in the final wine.

Food & Serving
Prunotto Barolo Magnum 2020 is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes and classic Piedmontese cuisine. Think braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, osso buco, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also shines alongside roasted root vegetables, polenta with wild mushrooms, and hearty autumn stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In magnum, decanting is recommended: give the wine 1–2 hours in a decanter in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfurl; older bottles will benefit from a more gentle, shorter decant just to remove sediment and let the aromas open.

Producer
Prunotto is a historic Piedmont estate with roots dating back to the early 20th century, long recognized as one of the key names in the rise of Barolo and Barbaresco on the world stage. Since joining forces with the Antinori family in the 1990s, Prunotto has combined deep local knowledge with the technical expertise and vision of one of Italy’s most influential wine dynasties. The estate farms prime vineyard sites across the Langhe and Monferrato, crafting wines that highlight the nuances of Nebbiolo and other native varieties. Prunotto’s Barolo has become a benchmark for the region—respected for its consistency, elegance, and age-worthiness—and the winery continues to play a significant role in promoting Piedmont as one of Italy’s greatest fine wine regions.
