Description
Prunotto Barolo Cerretta 2020 is a single-vineyard Barolo that captures the power and depth of Serralunga d’Alba while maintaining the elegance for which Prunotto is known. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, it offers a precise, terroir-driven expression of one of Barolo’s most esteemed crus. This is a wine for collectors and enthusiasts looking for a structured, age-worthy Barolo from a benchmark producer under the Antinori umbrella.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Prunotto Barolo Cerretta 2020 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is intricate and layered, opening slowly with notes of wild cherry, dried rose petals, violets and blood orange, followed by hints of liquorice, truffle, tobacco leaf and a gentle spice from oak aging.
On the palate, the wine is firm and vertical, with the hallmark tannic backbone of Serralunga tempered by refined texture and purity of fruit. Flavours of sour cherry, red currant and pomegranate intertwine with savoury notes of leather, underbrush and mineral-tinged earth, finishing with lingering notes of spice and dried herbs. The acidity is vibrant and finely tuned, giving the wine lift and precision. Still very youthful, the 2020 Cerretta has significant aging potential; with proper cellaring it should evolve beautifully over 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity, harmony and tertiary nuances.
Production
Cerretta is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most renowned crus, characterized by compact calcareous-clay and marl soils that confer structure, tension and longevity to Nebbiolo. The vineyard sits on well-exposed slopes that benefit from excellent diurnal range, promoting slow, even ripening and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested by hand, allowing meticulous selection of bunches at optimal phenolic ripeness. In the cellar, Nebbiolo is traditionally vinified with temperature-controlled fermentation and an extended maceration to gently extract colour, tannins and aromatics. The wine then matures in oak – typically large-format casks and/or carefully selected barrels – for an extended period before bottling, followed by additional bottle aging to integrate its structure and refine its bouquet.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb match for rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef short ribs, osso buco, roast lamb, game meats, or classic Piemontese specialities like brasato al Barolo and tajarin with white truffles. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo-style glasses to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full complexity; older bottles may need a shorter, more careful decant just to remove sediment.
Producer
Prunotto is a historic Piemontese estate whose roots in the Langhe date back to the early 20th century, earning a reputation as one of Barolo and Barbaresco’s reference producers. Since joining forces with Marchesi Antinori in the 1990s, Prunotto has combined deep local tradition with the resources and precision of one of Italy’s most influential wine families. The estate has been instrumental in highlighting the singular character of individual crus, including Cerretta, helping to elevate Barolo’s status on the world stage. Today, Prunotto is recognized for its meticulous vineyard work, terroir-driven single-vineyard bottlings and consistently high quality across its range of Nebbiolo-based wines.
