Description
Prunotto Barolo Bussia 2016 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most admired crus, offering both power and finesse in equal measure. From the historic Bussia hillside in Monforte d’Alba, it combines the elegance expected of great Barolo with the depth and structure that have made this site legendary.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a garnet-red hue with the brick-toned edge typical of Barolo as it begins to evolve. The nose is layered and refined, with aromas of rose petals, red cherry, dried herbs, licorice, tobacco, and subtle earthy spice.
On the palate, it is structured and energetic, with firm but polished tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory finish. The core of ripe red fruit is supported by notes of tar, spice, and mineral nuance, giving the wine both complexity and length. While already impressive, it has the depth and architecture to age gracefully for many years, developing further tertiary character with time in bottle.
Production
Bussia is one of Barolo’s most celebrated vineyard areas, known for its marly limestone and clay soils, which help produce wines of concentration, precision, and longevity. The 2016 vintage benefited from a long, balanced growing season, allowing the Nebbiolo grapes to ripen slowly and evenly before careful harvest.
Vinification follows a traditional Barolo approach with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract color, aroma, and tannin structure. The wine is then matured in oak to soften and integrate its framework while preserving the expressive character of the Bussia terroir.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich Piedmontese dishes such as braised beef, truffle risotto, veal shank, and agnolotti del plin with butter and sage. It also works beautifully with game, roast lamb, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening young to allow the aromas and tannins to fully unfold.
Producer
Prunotto is one of Piedmont’s most respected names, with roots dating back to the early 20th century and a long-standing reputation for showcasing the character of the region’s best vineyards. Now under the Antinori family, the estate continues to combine tradition with precision, producing wines that are widely recognized for their purity, balance, and sense of place.
