In the glass, the 2019 Montestefano Riserva shows a deep, luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, classic for top Nebbiolo. The nose is intense and layered: dark cherries, macerated strawberries and black raspberry intertwine with notes of dried rose petals, violet, liquorice, tar, leather and warm spices, all wrapped in a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, this is a wine of stature and textural depth, as Antonio Galloni notes. Expect a full-bodied, tightly structured Barbaresco with vibrant acidity and plenty of ripe, fine-grained tannin. Production
Montestefano is one of Barbaresco’s warmest and most powerful vineyards, a southwest-facing cru with calcareous clay soils that naturally yield structured, age-worthy Nebbiolo. Produttori del Barbaresco harvests Nebbiolo grapes here by hand, typically at optimal ripeness in early to mid-October, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete, with an extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics, colour and tannin. The Riserva then ages for several years in large neutral Slavonian oak botti, followed by additional time in bottle before release, preserving purity of fruit while allowing the wine’s hallmark complexity and firm structure to come together.

Food & Serving
This Montestefano Riserva calls for rich, savoury dishes that can stand up to its tannin and intensity: braised beef short ribs, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game dishes, truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, or mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended if drinking now, especially from magnum, to allow the wine to unfurl its layers and soften the tannins.
