Description

Pouilly-Fuissé is one of Burgundy’s most prized Chardonnay appellations, and this Vieilles Vignes bottling from Domaine Saumaize captures the region’s balance of richness, precision, and minerality. Made from old vines and crafted in the heart of the Mâconnais, it offers a more layered and concentrated expression than a standard village wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a bright golden hue with youthful freshness. The nose is typically expressive and refined, with aromas of ripe citrus, white flowers, orchard fruit, and subtle hints of hazelnut, brioche, and limestone-driven minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and elegant, with a supple texture supported by lively acidity and a saline, chalky finish. The old-vine concentration adds depth and persistence, giving the wine both immediate appeal and the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 4 to 7 years.

Production
Produced in Bourgogne’s southern Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé benefits from slopes of limestone and clay soils that lend Chardonnay both freshness and breadth. The old vines contribute naturally lower yields and greater concentration, while careful harvesting and precise vinification are used to preserve the wine’s purity and terroir expression. Domaine Saumaize is known for a restrained, quality-focused approach that highlights site character rather than heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile white Burgundy that pairs beautifully with roast chicken, turkey, veal in cream sauce, shellfish, lobster, grilled fish, and mushroom dishes. It is best served at 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if served young.
