Description

Pormenor Douro Red 2020 blends Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca from Portugal’s Douro into a dry, oak-aged red with baking spice and vanilla. It feels compact for a Douro red at 12.5% alcohol. The oak gives nutmeg and vanilla rather than a big sweet frame. Open it for grilled meat, game or a board of cured Portuguese presunto.

About the Wine
Pormenor Douro Red 2020 is built from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca grown on schist soils in the Douro. That trio gives this bottle a very clear shape: Touriga Nacional brings violet-dark fruit, Tinta Roriz adds red plum bite, and Touriga Franca fills the centre with black cherry. The wine sits at 12.5% alcohol, a slimmer frame than many Douro reds from warm years. The dry profile keeps the schist grip visible, especially after the first swirl brings up dusty spice. That lower register is one of the clues to Pormenor’s hand in this exact bottling. In the cellar, the wine was aged in oak barrels, and the wood shows through vanilla, nutmeg and a gentle baking-spice warmth. The 2020 vintage carries that oak as a seasoning over ripe berry fruit, with a small toffee note tucked into the middle of the palate. The extraction reads measured, so the tannins feel fine rather than chunky. A faint nutty edge appears under the vanilla after a few minutes in the glass.

Tasting Notes
The first smell is roasted nut, vanilla pod and dark plum, with a little violet from the Touriga Nacional rising after the oak spice settles in the glass. On the palate, Pormenor Douro Red 2020 moves through black cherry, red plum skin and a firm line of schist dust that feels very tied to this producer’s lighter Douro style. Nutmeg and baking spices build through the middle, then a ripe toffee note gives the dry finish a warm brown-sugar edge right where the barrel ageing shows its hand. The 12.5% alcohol gives the texture a compact and savoury line, and the tannins feel fine-grained enough for roasted meat or firm cheese. Give it air in a broad glass, and the oak shifts from vanilla to clove and toasted hazelnut. Drink from 2024 to 2028.

Food Pairing
The wine’s vanilla, nutmeg and dry schist grip make grilled rib-eye a strong match, especially if the meat has a charred edge and only coarse salt. For game, go to roast venison with juniper, wild boar stew or duck legs cooked until the skin turns crisp. A regional Portuguese plate would be posta mirandesa with potatoes and greens, a northern classic that suits the black cherry and baking-spice side of this Douro red. The beef’s deep juices pick up the wine’s toffee note, then the dry tannins clean up the last bite. The same bottle has enough savoury detail for aged queijo da Serra and hard sheep’s cheese. Add presunto or chouriço, then let the wine’s clove and toasted hazelnut notes meet the salt.

Producer
Pormenor is the Douro project of Pedro Coelho, and the name means “detail” in Portuguese, a rare case where the label gives a fair clue to the glass before any back-label reading starts. That word matters here, and Coelho’s wines are built around small shifts in weight, savoury spice and texture that a fast tasting can miss when the first pour seems quiet over a meal. The 2020 Douro Red shows the house hand through its 12.5% alcohol and its three-grape Douro blend: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca, all rooted in the schist language of the valley. Pormenor’s barrels leave a clear mark here, with vanilla, nutmeg and toasted sweetness sitting over fruit that still feels dark and compact after a short swirl in the glass. The producer also has a particular gift for making Douro reds feel ready for the table, especially beside grilled meat and aged cheese, and that suits the dry and spicy profile of this bottle around a Sunday roast. Look at the glass after ten minutes and the producer’s detail is in the nutty edge, the dusty schist grip and the way the oak spice settles into the finish with a warm clove echo and a faint mineral rasp.
