Description
Pontet-Canet 2022 is one of Pauillac’s most sought-after Fifth Growths, combining classic Left Bank structure with a more expressive, modern sense of purity. Known for its biodynamic approach and consistently impressive quality, it stands as a benchmark wine in Bordeaux and a favorite among collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a deep, dark ruby color with impressive concentration. The nose typically opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, violet, and subtle hints of spice and earth. On the palate, it is powerful yet poised, with ripe dark fruit, firm but polished tannins, and a long mineral-tinged finish that reflects its Pauillac identity.
The 2022 vintage should have excellent aging potential, with the balance and structure to evolve beautifully over the next two to three decades. While approachable with patience in youth, this is a wine that will reward cellaring as its complexity and finesse continue to develop.
Production
Pontet-Canet is located in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils provide ideal drainage and help the Cabernet Sauvignon achieve full ripeness and depth. The estate is farmed biodynamically, with meticulous vineyard work aimed at preserving soil health and expressing the character of the terroir. Harvesting is typically done by hand, with careful sorting before a vinification process that focuses on parcel selection and gentle extraction to preserve purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for rich, flavorful dishes such as côte de boeuf, lamb rack, roast duck, venison, or mushroom-based cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open and soften.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet is one of the most respected estates in Pauillac, with a history dating back to the 18th century and classification as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Under the stewardship of the Tesseron family, the château has earned international acclaim for its biodynamic conversion and the outstanding quality of its wines. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the finest and most innovative properties in the Médoc.
