Description
Presented here in an impressive 3L double magnum, Pontet-Canet 2018 is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most progressive estates. This organically and biodynamically farmed Grand Vin marries classic Left Bank structure with a sumptuous, modern sense of purity and finesse. In the 2018 vintage, Pontet-Canet delivers a wine of striking intensity and energy that is already captivating, yet built to age gracefully for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pontet-Canet shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, almost inky at the core, hinting at its power and concentration. The nose bursts from the glass with vivid aromas of raspberry tart, crème de cassis, blackcurrant pastilles and rose oil, layered with notes of Chinese five-spice, cinnamon stick, graphite, dusty earth and wild underbrush.
On the palate, this is rich, plush and full-bodied, a true hedonist’s Pauillac. Layers of black and red berry compote—think blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe raspberry—unfold with exotic spice, floral lift and a touch of pencil lead and cocoa. The tannins are beautifully ripe and velvety, providing structure without harshness, while a core of freshness keeps the wine vibrant rather than heavy. The finish is long, aromatic and almost explosive with spice. While already remarkably seductive in its youth, the 2018 has the depth, balance and backbone to evolve gracefully for three decades or more, especially in this large-format bottle, which will further extend its aging potential.
Production
Pontet-Canet lies in the heart of Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Médoc, on deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2018 blend is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, reflecting the classic Left Bank profile. The estate, fully certified organic and biodynamic, harvests by hand, parcel by parcel, to bring in only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Pontet-Canet combines traditional and innovative approaches, maturing the wine in a mix of 55% French oak barrels and 45% amphorae. This judicious use of wood and amphora preserves fruit purity, refines tannins and underlines the wine’s sense of place, rather than masking it with excessive oak.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Pauillac is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes: grilled or roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also complements earthy, truffle-accented dishes, mushrooms in red wine sauces and hard, aged cheeses such as Comté or matured cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance and expression. In this 3L format, decanting 2–3 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, soften the tannins and reveal its complex bouquet.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet, classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, has long punched above its official rank and is now regarded as one of Pauillac’s leading estates. Located opposite some of the Médoc’s most illustrious names, Pontet-Canet has undergone a remarkable transformation under the stewardship of the Tesseron family, becoming a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux. Its commitment to meticulous vineyard work, horse-plowing, low yields and minimal intervention in the cellar has earned the château a reputation for producing wines of extraordinary purity, energy and terroir expression. Today, Pontet-Canet stands as a reference point for both quality and sustainability in the region, with vintages like 2018 reinforcing its status among the elite of Bordeaux.
