Description
Poliziano’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a classic expression of one of Tuscany’s most respected DOCG wines, offering elegance, structure, and real regional character. Made primarily from Prugnolo Gentile, the local Sangiovese clone, it reflects the historic winemaking tradition of Montepulciano while delivering remarkable quality for the price.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a vibrant ruby color with youthful depth and a refined Tuscan brightness. The nose is layered and inviting, with notes of red cherry, ripe plum, violets, dried herbs, and a subtle touch of spice and oak.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with fresh acidity, fine tannins, and a core of red fruit supported by earthy, savory complexity. The oak aging adds polish without overwhelming the wine’s traditional character, and the finish is long and composed. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now but also has the structure to age gracefully for several years.
Production
The grapes come from the hills around Montepulciano in eastern Tuscany, where the combination of altitude, warm days, cool nights, and clay-rich soils helps preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine is made mainly from Prugnolo Gentile, supplemented by small amounts of local varieties such as Colorino and Canaiolo, with a touch of Merlot in some vintages. After fermentation, it matures for around 15 months in oak, adding texture and depth while keeping the focus on the grape and terroir.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for Tuscan-style dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù, grilled steak, roast lamb, and braised beef, as well as aged pecorino cheese. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes, especially if opened young, to let the aromas and tannins fully unwind.
Producer
Poliziano is a long-established family estate in Montepulciano, run for decades by the Carletti family and named after the Renaissance poet Angelo Ambrogini, known as Poliziano. The winery is one of the leading producers in the region and has played an important role in raising the profile of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano through consistently high-quality wines and a strong commitment to local tradition.
