Description
Poggio Scalette Chianti Classico 2023 is a refined Tuscan red that combines the lively character of Sangiovese with the distinctive elegance of the Chianti Classico hills. Crafted by the renowned Poggio Scalette estate, it offers a fresh, food-friendly interpretation of one of Italy’s most historic appellations.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in colour, this Chianti Classico opens with aromas of red cherries, violets and wild herbs, complemented by subtle earthy and spicy nuances. The palate is fresh and balanced, with flavours of sour cherry, raspberry and plum supported by lively acidity and fine, savoury tannins. A pleasant mineral note adds definition, while a persistent finish leaves hints of herbs and spice. It can be enjoyed now for its youthful freshness, or cellared for several years as the structure softens and the aromas gain complexity.
Production
Produced in the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany, Poggio Scalette’s vineyards benefit from the area’s elevated, hilly terrain and mineral-rich soils, which help preserve freshness in the grapes. The wine is based primarily on Sangiovese, the traditional grape of Chianti Classico, and is made with careful selection of fruit followed by controlled fermentation and maturation designed to preserve the variety’s vibrant fruit, floral character and savoury structure. Exact vineyard and cellar details may vary by vintage.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, giving the wine a short time to breathe before serving; decanting is optional, but can help reveal its aromas when enjoyed young. Its bright acidity and firm yet polished tannins make it an excellent match for Tuscan dishes, tomato-based pasta, pizza, grilled sausages, roast poultry, mushroom dishes and mature cheeses.
Producer
Poggio Scalette is a respected estate in the Chianti Classico hills of Tuscany, known for expressing the character of its high-altitude vineyards with precision and restraint. The property is particularly associated with the acclaimed Il Carbonaione wine, helping establish its reputation among quality-focused producers in the region. Its wines combine traditional Tuscan varieties with meticulous vineyard work and a modern, terroir-conscious approach.
