Description

Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from some of Montalcino’s most prized hillside vineyards. Crafted from parcels spanning multiple altitudes and soil types, this Brunello balances power and elegance with striking precision. It’s a wine for those who appreciate classic, terroir-driven Tuscany with a modern polish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino 2020 shows a deep, luminous ruby red with delicate garnet highlights at the rim. The nose is layered and expressive, offering notes of ripe red cherry, black plum, and wild strawberry intertwined with dried rose petals, thyme, and hints of blood orange. Subtle tones of tobacco leaf, cedar, sweet spices, and a touch of underbrush add complexity as it opens. On the palate, the wine is expansive yet beautifully composed, with a core of juicy red and dark fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry, and redcurrant are supported by notes of licorice, leather, and savory herbs, all lifted by a vibrant, mouth-watering acidity typical of high-quality Sangiovese from Montalcino. The finish is long, sapid, and mineral-inflected, suggesting excellent aging potential. While approachable with some aeration in its youth, this 2020 Brunello will continue to evolve gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and harmony.

Production
Poggio Landi’s vineyards lie in some of Montalcino’s most distinctive and diverse zones, at elevations ranging from approximately 175 to 500 meters above sea level. This variation in height, exposure, and soil—ranging from clay and marl to limestone-rich, stony parcels—creates a mosaic of micro-terroirs that contribute layers of aroma and structure to the final wine. The Sangiovese grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from the different plots and vinified separately to preserve their individual characteristics. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to ensure a slow, even extraction of color, aroma, and tannin. The wine is then aged for an extended period in large oak casks and/or carefully selected barrels, in line with Brunello di Montalcino regulations, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine’s aromatic complexity to blossom before bottling and further bottle refinement.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for robust, flavor-packed dishes. Serve it alongside classic Tuscan fare such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, or aged Pecorino Toscano. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, game birds, and hearty stews featuring root vegetables and herbs. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in the wine’s first decade, to allow the aromas to fully open and the palate to soften and reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Poggio Landi is an estate rooted in one of the world’s most celebrated terroirs: Montalcino, in the heart of Tuscany. The winery’s holdings span some of the region’s most prestigious and varied zones, a diversity that has become central to its identity and style. By carefully blending fruit from vineyards at different altitudes and with distinct soil compositions, Poggio Landi crafts Brunellos that are both true to tradition and finely tuned to contemporary expectations of balance and drinkability. The estate has earned recognition for wines that combine depth, elegance, and a clear sense of place, reinforcing Montalcino’s reputation as a benchmark region for age-worthy Sangiovese.
