Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Brunello shows a radiant, transparent ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, signalling both purity of fruit and classic Sangiovese structure. The nose opens with bright red cherries, wild strawberries and redcurrants, layered with notes of dried rose petals, citrus peel, warm baking spices and a subtle hint of tobacco and tea leaf. Underneath, a mineral core emerges as an iron-rich, almost rusty or saline impression, adding a sense of tension and depth to the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is precise yet generous, with a silk-sheathed structure that carries flavours of sour cherry, pomegranate, ripe cranberry and blood orange alongside hints of clove, anise and dried herbs. The famed iron and salty-mineral notes of Poggio di Sotto’s vineyards run through the mid-palate, playing beautifully against the richness of the dark berry fruit. Tannins are fine, chalky and tightly woven, with vibrant acidity that keeps everything lifted and focused. The finish is long, savoury and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent aging potential of 12–20 years, during which the wine will gain further complexity, earthiness and tertiary nuance.

Production
Poggio di Sotto’s vineyards lie on the southern slopes of Montalcino near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, an area prized for its combination of altitude, well-drained galestro and marl soils, and cooling breezes from Mount Amiata. This mix produces Sangiovese of great aromatic lift and a distinctive mineral, iron-tinged profile. The estate works organically with low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it to the cellar. Fermentation typically takes place in large wooden vats with native yeasts, allowing a slow, gentle extraction that preserves elegance over power. Brunello here is then aged for several years in large Slavonian oak botti, a traditional approach that polishes the tannins without masking the purity of the fruit or the character of the terroir, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

This 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is a superb partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, roasted game birds, or pork loin with herbs and fennel. It also shines alongside aged Tuscan pecorino, mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, and dishes featuring tomato and Mediterranean herbs, where its bright acidity and savoury minerality can truly sing. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or wide-bowled glasses to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s layered bouquet.
