Description
Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a benchmark expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most revered traditional estates. Crafted with minimal intervention and immense respect for terroir, it captures the elegance, depth and tension that have made this wine a cult favorite among Brunello lovers. Its unique charm lies in the combination of high-altitude vineyards, long ageing and a strict, uncompromising approach to quality that lets Sangiovese speak with absolute clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Brunello shows a luminous, transparent ruby garnet hue – refined and almost weightless in appearance, yet clearly concentrated at the core. The nose is wonderfully lifted and complex: red cherries, wild strawberries and blood orange peel merge with notes of dried rose petals, violets, sweet tobacco, cedar, tea leaves and a hint of Mediterranean herbs and underbrush. With air, more savoury nuances emerge – leather, subtle spice and a mineral, almost saline edge.
On the palate, this is all about precision and finesse rather than power. The fruit is pure and vibrant – sour cherry, redcurrant and pomegranate – wrapped in fine, chalk-dust tannins and a vivid line of acidity that gives the wine energy and length. There’s great harmony between the fruit, spice and earthy notes, with a long, graceful finish that leaves impressions of citrus zest, dried flowers and stone. Already approachable in its youth thanks to the balance and silkiness of the vintage, it still has the structure to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with proper cellaring.
Production
Poggio di Sotto’s vineyards lie in the southeastern sector of Montalcino, near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, at relatively high altitudes with steep slopes and well-drained, stony galestro and limestone soils. This cooler, breezy setting promotes long, even ripening and naturally high acidity – ideal for finely etched, ageworthy Sangiovese. The estate follows a natural, non-interventionist philosophy in the vineyard, relying on meticulous hand work, strict green harvest and significant crop thinning to keep yields exceptionally low and concentration high. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation is spontaneous with only native yeasts in stainless steel and large oak vats, with gentle extractions to preserve delicacy. The Brunello then matures for an extended period – around four years in medium and large Slavonian oak casks – before bottling without filtration, allowing the wine to retain its full aromatic spectrum and textural nuance.
Food & Serving
This Brunello shines alongside refined, flavourful dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with rosemary, braised veal shank, wild boar ragù, or aged Tuscan pecorino and other hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta and slow-cooked game birds, where its acidity and savoury complexity can really come into play. Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy-style or Brunello glasses to allow the aromas to open fully. For the 2018 vintage, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking now, both to wake up the aromatics and to soften the youthful structure; shorter aeration is sufficient as it gains bottle age.
Producer
Founded in the late 1980s, Poggio di Sotto quickly established itself as one of Montalcino’s most sought-after and traditional Brunello producers, celebrated for its uncompromising focus on Sangiovese and terroir transparency. Located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, overlooking the Orcia valley, the estate became a reference point for elegant, long-lived Brunello, often cited alongside the region’s very finest names. Over the years, Poggio di Sotto has earned numerous accolades from international critics and collectors for its consistently high quality, classical style and remarkable ageing capacity. Today, it continues to be a standard-bearer for artisanal, non-interventionist winemaking in Tuscany, producing wines that capture both the soul of Sangiovese and the distinct character of southeastern Montalcino.
