Description
Poggio al Tesoro Bolgheri Il Seggio 2023 is a polished Super Tuscan blend that captures the depth and freshness of Bolgheri in one elegant bottle. Built around Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, it balances ripe Mediterranean fruit with structure, finesse, and a distinctly coastal sense of place. The wine takes its name from the Seggio stream, a historic waterway that has helped shape the terroir of Castagneto Carducci for centuries.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Il Seggio typically shows a deep ruby color with inviting brightness at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered, with dark cherry, blackberry, plum, and subtle notes of herbs, spice, and graphite, often lifted by a fresh mineral edge.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, smooth and well-framed, with supple tannins and a lively line of acidity that keeps the richness in check. The finish is long and refined, with dark fruit, savory spice, and a touch of earthiness. While enjoyable in its youth, it should also reward a few years of cellaring, gaining additional complexity over the next 5–8 years.
Production
The vineyards lie within the Bolgheri appellation in coastal Tuscany, where the soils are influenced by the Seggio stream and its alluvial deposits. These deposits enrich the native clay soils with small stones, improving drainage and helping the vines develop concentration and balance. The result is a terroir that naturally supports both ripeness and freshness, ideal for Bordeaux-inspired varieties. Harvesting is typically carried out with careful selection to preserve fruit quality, followed by vinification that emphasizes purity, structure, and varietal expression, with aging used to round out the blend and integrate the tannins.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled or roasted red meats, lamb, game, and richly flavored dishes such as beef ragù or braised short ribs. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses and Tuscan-inspired cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for about 1 hour if drinking young, to let the aromatics open and the texture soften.
