Description

Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Chardonnay Bussiador 2020 is a benchmark Italian Chardonnay that marries Burgundian finesse with the depth and structure of Piedmont. Sourced from carefully selected parcels in the famed Bussia area of Monforte d’Alba, this is a serious, age‑worthy white crafted with the same precision the estate applies to its great Barolos. First produced in the late 1980s, Bussiador has become one of the region’s reference-point Chardonnays and a compelling alternative to top white Burgundy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bussiador shows a luminous straw-yellow color with golden highlights, hinting at both ripeness and careful barrel aging. The nose opens with layers of ripe orchard fruit—golden apple, pear and quince—interwoven with notes of lemon curd, acacia blossom and chamomile. Subtle, well-integrated oak brings tones of vanilla bean, toasted hazelnut and a gentle smoky nuance, while a faint mineral edge recalls wet stone and chalk. On the palate, this Chardonnay is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, combining richness with a vibrant, saline freshness. Flavors of ripe peach, baked apple and Meyer lemon glide over a creamy, almost waxy texture, supported by lively acidity and a finely etched mineral backbone. The oak is polished and refined, adding structure and length rather than weight. The finish is long, savory and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of citrus zest, toasted nuts and subtle spice. While already expressive in 2020, this wine has the stuffing to evolve beautifully for 6–10 years from vintage, gaining complexity, honeyed nuances and deeper tertiary character with time in bottle.

Production
The Bussiador Chardonnay is sourced primarily from estate vineyards in the prestigious Bussia area of Monforte d’Alba, a terroir better known for Barolo but equally capable of producing structured, complex whites. Here, calcareous clay and marl soils, combined with significant diurnal temperature shifts, give grapes excellent aromatic intensity and natural acidity. Yields are kept low and the fruit is harvested by hand, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters make the cut. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented in small French oak barrels, where the wine also undergoes partial or full malolactic conversion depending on the vintage’s balance. Bussiador is then aged on its fine lees in barrique—typically around 10–12 months—with periodic bâtonnage to build texture and complexity, before resting further in bottle prior to release. The result is a Chardonnay that combines Piedmontese precision with the layered depth associated with top-tier oak-aged whites.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Chardonnay that shines alongside rich, refined dishes. It pairs beautifully with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, monkfish or turbot, as well as creamy seafood risotto or saffron-accented pasta. On land, think roast chicken with herbs, veal in a delicate cream sauce, truffle-infused dishes, or aged cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère and well-matured Pecorino. Serve at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to allow its aromatics to fully open without losing freshness. Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour is advisable for the 2020 vintage, especially in its youth, to help the wine shed any initial oak-driven tightness and reveal its full range of fruit, floral and mineral notes.

Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of Piedmont’s most respected and historic estates, based in Monforte d’Alba in the heart of the Barolo zone. Founded by Aldo Conterno in 1969, after his departure from the family-run Giacomo Conterno estate, the winery quickly gained fame for producing powerful yet refined Barolo from top crus such as Bussia, Romirasco and Cicala. While best known for its reds, Aldo Conterno was among the early pioneers of serious, barrel-fermented Chardonnay in Piedmont, demonstrating that the region could also excel with world-class whites. Today, the estate remains family-run and continues to be a reference point for traditional craftsmanship combined with a thoughtful adoption of modern techniques, consistently earning high acclaim from international critics and collectors alike.
