Description

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 2020 is a powerful and refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most revered crus in Monforte d’Alba. Sourced from the historic Romirasco vineyard within the Bussia hill, this wine marries concentration, elegance, and a deep sense of place. Often considered the flagship wine of the estate, Romirasco is produced in limited quantities and is highly sought after by collectors and serious Barolo enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Romirasco shows a luminous, deep garnet core with orange-tinged reflections at the rim, typical of classic Nebbiolo. The nose is complex and refined, opening slowly with notes of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and dried rose petals, followed by hints of tar, licorice, tobacco leaf, and subtle spice. With air, more layers emerge: sweet herbs, cedar, and a mineral, almost ferrous edge that speaks clearly of Monforte’s limestone-clay soils. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a firm, finely etched tannic structure that promises long aging. Flavors of red and black cherry, raspberry, and blood orange are wrapped in notes of dried flowers, anise, and earthy spice, all supported by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, savory, and persistent, leaving impressions of mineral, rose, and fine, slightly salty tannin. The 2020 vintage offers approachability in its youth with its purity of fruit, but this Romirasco is fundamentally built for the cellar and will evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining further complexity, softness, and tertiary nuances of leather, truffle, and forest floor.

Production
Romirasco is a prime parcel within the famed Bussia hill in Monforte d’Alba, a south and south-west facing cru known for its calcareous clay and marl soils at relatively high altitude. These poor, well-drained soils naturally limit yields and give Nebbiolo both power and finesse, while the diurnal temperature swings help preserve acidity and aromatic detail. The vines are traditionally tended, with careful green harvesting and strict selection to ensure only the best grapes make it into the final cuvée. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled vats with extended maceration to extract color, tannin, and aromatic depth. After fermentation, the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks (botti) for an extended period—typically around two to three years—before refinement in bottle, allowing tannins to integrate and the wine’s distinctive Romirasco character to fully emerge.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes and refined northern Italian cuisine. It pairs beautifully with braised meats such as ossobuco, brasato al Barolo, and slow-cooked lamb shank, as well as game birds, roasted duck, and venison. Earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, truffle-infused pasta, and aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Piave, or aged Comté) also complement its complexity and structure. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant 2–3 hours before serving; older bottles (once matured) will benefit from a gentler 60–90 minute decant to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the benchmark estates of Barolo, based in Monforte d’Alba in the heart of Piedmont. Founded by Aldo Conterno in the late 1960s after he parted ways with his family’s winery, the estate quickly gained an international reputation for producing profound, age-worthy Barolo that bridges traditional and modern styles. Working primarily with top sites in Bussia, including Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello, the Conterno family has long focused on meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and careful, unhurried élevage in large oak casks. Over the decades, Poderi Aldo Conterno has become a reference point for Barolo lovers worldwide, regularly earning top scores and a place on the lists of serious collectors and fine-dining restaurants, while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions and identity of Monforte d’Alba.
