Description

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia 2013 in magnum is one of Barolo’s true benchmark wines, released only in top vintages and after nearly a decade of patient cellar aging. Bottled in a generous 1.5 L format and limited to just 3,000 bottles, this is a collector’s Barolo that balances power, perfume and precision with remarkable finesse. The 2013 Granbussia is drawn from prime parcels within the famed Bussia cru, a wine that has come to symbolize the elegance and refinement of traditional yet meticulously crafted Nebbiolo from Monforte d’Alba.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Granbussia shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of great Nebbiolo beginning to show its noble evolution. The nose is hauntingly complex and layered: aromas of damp earth and autumn leaves mingle with notes of white truffle, dried rose petals and forest berries. With air, subtler nuances unfold—licorice root, anise seed, tar, tobacco leaf and a fine mineral echo that speaks clearly of Bussia’s hillside slopes. On the palate, this Barolo is both ethereal and firmly structured, with a poised, vertical profile. The fruit is pure and incisive—wild cherry, red currant and raspberry—wrapped in savory tones of spice, anise, tar and dark licorice. Tannins are finely woven yet authoritative, providing the framework for very long-term aging, while the acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, extending the finish into minutes. Already captivating today with proper aeration, the 2013 has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 20–30 years or more in magnum, gaining further tertiary complexity and silkiness over time.

Production
Granbussia 2013 is crafted entirely from Nebbiolo grown in select parcels within the prestigious Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most revered hillsides. The vineyards sit on a mix of clay-limestone marl and sandy elements, at altitude, which together give the wine its aromatic lift, tension and fine-grained tannins. In 2013, a significant portion of the fruit naturally dropped during the growing season, leading to lower yields, later harvesting and slower, more even ripening—conditions that greatly enhanced depth and aromatic refinement. The grapes from two key Bussia vineyards were co-fermented rather than blended after malolactic fermentation, allowing the different parcels to harmonize from the very start of vinification. Traditional methods are employed: a long maceration on the skins and aging in large wooden casks over several years, followed by extended bottle aging in the estate’s cellars. This long élevage is why the wine is released only about nine years after harvest, fully shaped yet still at the beginning of its long life.

Food & Serving
This is a Barolo that shines alongside refined, earthy cuisine. Think white truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, braised veal shank, roasted game birds, or slow-cooked lamb with root vegetables and wild mushrooms. Mature cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Toma or Castelmagno are also excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics without emphasizing the tannins. In magnum, the 2013 Granbussia benefits from generous aeration: decant 2–3 hours before serving in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the full spectrum of aromas—earth, truffle, spice and red fruit—to unfold.

Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the most esteemed names in Barolo, based in Monforte d’Alba in the heart of Piedmont. Founded by Aldo Conterno after he split from the family estate, the winery quickly built a reputation for producing profound, ageworthy Nebbiolo that bridges traditional Barolo craftsmanship with a precise, vineyard-focused approach. Granbussia, the estate’s flagship Barolo Riserva from the Bussia cru, is only made in the finest vintages and in very limited quantities, making it one of the most sought-after wines in the region. Over the decades, Poderi Aldo Conterno has become a reference point for collectors and critics alike, consistently demonstrating the extraordinary potential of Bussia’s terroir and helping to cement Barolo’s status among the world’s greatest red wines.
