Description
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2019 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a commanding, ageworthy Barolo from one of Piemonte’s most revered names. Sourced from the celebrated Cicala cru, this wine showcases Nebbiolo’s power and elegance in equal measure, here amplified by the slower evolution that only a magnum can deliver. It’s a collector-worthy bottle that marries classic Barolo structure with the purity and richness of a benchmark vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cicala shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged reflections forming at the rim, hinting at both concentration and slow development. The nose opens with clear notes of ripe and dried red fruits – think dried strawberries and sweet crème de cassis – layered with dried roses, cherry liqueur, and a subtle balsamic lift. Underneath, you’ll find nuances of cedar, tobacco leaf, and fine spice from the oak, all wrapped in a distinctly savory, earthy frame.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, with a palpable weight of fruit that drives across the mid-palate and into a long, resonant finish. The sweetness of ripe red and black fruits is quickly balanced by firm oak-derived tannins and Nebbiolo’s naturally high acidity, giving the wine both richness and tension. The finish lingers with notes of cassis, dried cherry, leather, and finely grained wood spice. In magnum, this Barolo has impressive aging potential: it will benefit from patience and should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years from vintage, gaining further complexity, harmony, and tertiary notes.
Production
Cicala is a historic single vineyard within the Bussia area of Monforte d’Alba in Piemonte, known for its steep slopes, calcareous-clay soils, and excellent exposure—conditions that naturally limit yields and concentrate Nebbiolo’s aromas and structure. Grapes are harvested by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard to ensure perfect ripeness and healthy clusters. In classic Aldo Conterno style, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats with extended maceration on the skins to extract depth of color, tannin, and aroma. The wine is then matured in large oak casks for an extended period, allowing the ample fruit and powerful tannin structure to knit together slowly, before being bottled and given further time to rest prior to release—here presented in magnum to encourage an even more graceful evolution.
Food & Serving
This Barolo Cicala 2019 is a natural match for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Think braised beef or veal, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, truffle risotto, porcini-laden pastas, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity without emphasizing the tannins. In magnum, and given the wine’s youth and structure, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the layers of fruit, spice, and earth to fully unfurl.
Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of Barolo’s most esteemed estates, founded in the late 1960s by Aldo Conterno after he parted ways with his family’s winery to pursue his own vision. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the estate quickly became a reference point for world-class Barolo, particularly for its single-vineyard wines from the Bussia area, including Cicala, Colonnello, and Romirasco. Aldo Conterno is often cited as a master of balance—bridging traditional Barolo structure with a refined, modern precision—earning consistent acclaim from critics and collectors alike. Today, the Conterno family continues to uphold this legacy, crafting wines that are considered benchmarks for the region and sought after in cellars around the world.
