Description
Podere Il Carnasciale Ottantadue 2022 is a pure Sangiovese from the hills of Valdarno di Sopra in Tuscany, crafted as the estate’s most accessible and easy-drinking red. Bright, fresh and finely etched, it showcases the graceful side of Sangiovese without sacrificing character or depth. Born from the same visionary boutique estate that created the cult wine Il Caberlot, Ottantadue offers a more relaxed, everyday entry into this highly regarded producer’s world.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ottantadue 2022 shines a luminous ruby red with youthful transparency at the rim, underlining its freshness and purity. The nose opens on bright red berries—think wild strawberry, red currant and sour cherry—layered with delicate lactic notes reminiscent of yogurt or cream, and a fine, understated savory spice that hints at leather and dried herbs in the background. Everything feels lifted and clean rather than heavy or opulent.
On the palate, the wine is lively, juicy and wonderfully drinkable, with a vibrant, dancing acidity that keeps each sip mouthwatering and refreshing. The red berry fruit remains in the foreground, supported by subtle earthy and spicy nuances that add complexity without weighing the wine down. Tannins are fine-grained and gentle, giving structure while staying discreet and supple. This is a Sangiovese that emphasizes precision, clarity and drinkability; best enjoyed over the next 3–6 years for its energy and charm, though it has the balance to evolve gracefully in the short to medium term.
Production
Ottantadue 2022 comes from the Valdarno di Sopra DOC, an historic yet relatively under-the-radar corner of Tuscany characterized by hillside vineyards, well-draining soils of clay, sand and stones, and a moderate climate tempered by altitude and cooling breezes from the Apennines. Podere Il Carnasciale typically works with low yields and careful, selective harvesting—often by hand—to ensure only perfectly ripe Sangiovese grapes make it into the cellar. Fermentation takes place in tank to preserve varietal definition and aromatic finesse. Crucially, the wine is aged not in oak but in concrete and stainless steel, a deliberate choice to highlight purity of fruit, tension and clarity rather than wood influence. The result is a precise, unadorned expression of Sangiovese that captures both place and variety in a direct, unmasked way.
Food & Serving
This fresh, mid-weight Sangiovese is incredibly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan fare such as tomato-based pasta dishes, pappardelle al ragù, grilled sausages, roasted chicken with herbs, and simple bistecca or pork chops. It also works well with antipasti of cured meats, aged Pecorino, mushroom bruschetta and rustic vegetable dishes like ribollita or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic brightness and refreshing acidity. Decanting is optional but a short 15–30 minute aeration in a carafe can help the wine open up its fruit and soften further, especially if served in its youth.
Producer
Podere Il Carnasciale is a tiny, cult-status estate tucked away in the hills of Tuscany, best known for its rare and highly sought-after Il Caberlot—a unique wine made from the elusive Caberlot grape and produced in extremely limited quantities. Founded by Wolf and Bettina Rogosky and carried forward by their family and team, the estate has become a reference point for meticulous, artisanal viticulture and thoughtful, small-scale winemaking. While Il Caberlot put Podere Il Carnasciale on the international map, wines like Ottantadue showcase another side of the property: a commitment to crafting elegant, terroir-driven bottles that are both refined and accessible. Within the Valdarno di Sopra appellation, the estate is regarded as one of the key quality pioneers, helping to demonstrate the potential of this historic but still emerging Tuscan zone.
