Description
Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli 2023 is an organic Sicilian red and the island’s only DOCG red wine appellation. A vibrant blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato, it combines the former’s depth with the latter’s fragrant freshness, offering an elegant expression of Sicily with a distinctly Mediterranean character.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-red in appearance, the wine opens with fresh aromas of red rose, raspberry, pink grapefruit and aromatic herbs, complemented by a delicate mineral note reminiscent of talc. On the palate, it is lively and well balanced, revealing flavours of sweet black cherry, black pepper and carob, followed by a gently spicy, rounded finish with hints of mulberry.
Its freshness and supple structure make it especially enjoyable in its youth, when the floral and red-fruited character is most expressive. It can also develop added softness and savoury complexity over the next few years when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
The grapes are organically grown in the Dispensa district near Menfi, in Sicily, where the warm Mediterranean climate helps Nero d’Avola ripen with generous fruit while preserving Frappato’s aromatic lift. The wine is made from a carefully balanced blend of the two native varieties; specific harvesting and vinification details are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and perfume. It pairs well with Sicilian specialities, grilled vegetables, aubergine dishes, tomato-based pasta, pizza, roast poultry and lightly spiced charcuterie. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although a brief airing in the glass can allow its floral and herbal aromas to open further.
Producer
Planeta is one of Sicily’s most respected contemporary wine producers, with a family winemaking tradition spanning generations and vineyards across several of the island’s distinctive wine regions. The estate has played an important role in showcasing Sicily’s indigenous grapes and diverse terroirs internationally, while its work with native varieties such as Nero d’Avola and Frappato has helped establish Cerasuolo di Vittoria as one of the island’s most notable red wines.
