Description
Pira Langhe Nebbiolo 2024 captures the pure, youthful expression of Nebbiolo from the rolling hills of Piedmont. Crafted by Pira Luigi, this red offers an approachable gateway into the world of Barolo’s noble grape, without the wait or intensity of top-tier cru bottlings. It balances tradition and drinkability, giving you classic Nebbiolo character in a fresher, more immediately enjoyable style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Langhe Nebbiolo shows a luminous garnet hue with vibrant ruby highlights, typical of young Nebbiolo. The nose is fragrant and precise, offering aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, lifted by notes of rose petals, violet, anise and a gentle hint of spice and dried herbs.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and focused, with firm but polished tannins that are balanced by fresh, mouth-watering acidity. Flavours of crunchy red berries, sour cherry and red currant are layered with hints of liquorice, dried roses and a subtle mineral edge. The 2024 vintage is designed for relatively early drinking, showing its best over the next 3–6 years, though a few years of bottle age will further soften the tannins and bring extra complexity.
Production
Sourced from hillside vineyards in the Langhe area of Piedmont, Pira Langhe Nebbiolo 2024 reflects calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo its hallmark perfume and structure. The grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of healthy, ripe bunches. In the cellar, gentle crushing and temperature-controlled fermentation on the skins draw out colour, aroma and fine tannin, followed by maturation in traditional vessels—often a mix of stainless steel and larger neutral wood—to preserve freshness and varietal purity. The result is a transparent, terroir-driven Nebbiolo that showcases the grape’s elegance rather than heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo pairs beautifully with classic Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, veal or beef brasato, mushroom risotto and truffle-inflected cuisine. It also works well with roast poultry, pork loin, charcuterie and aged or semi-hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Taleggio. Serve at 16–18°C; a light chill is best avoided so the aromatics can fully open. Young Langhe Nebbiolo benefits from a brief decant of 30–45 minutes to soften the tannins and enhance the floral and red-fruited bouquet.
Producer
Pira Luigi is part of the long-standing Pira winemaking lineage in Piedmont, a name closely associated with meticulous, terroir-focused Nebbiolo. Rooted in the hills of the Langhe, the estate has built its reputation on traditional vineyard work, low yields and a sensitive, minimalist approach in the cellar. While Barolo is often the headline, the winery’s Langhe Nebbiolo plays a crucial role in showcasing the more immediate, approachable side of the region’s flagship grape. Over the years, Pira’s wines have contributed to Piedmont’s rise as one of Italy’s most respected fine-wine regions, admired for their balance of authenticity, structure and elegance.
