Description
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2022 is a poised and luxurious Pauillac that beautifully captures both the sensual house style and the classical backbone of great left-bank Bordeaux. Dense yet impeccably refined, this 2022 is already signalling its place among the château’s modern greats. It recalls the legendary 1982 in its generosity and charm, but with the precision and polish of contemporary winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pichon Comtesse shows a deep, almost opaque garnet-purple hue, with a vibrant rim hinting at its youthful energy and concentration. The nose is intense and layered: ripe blackcurrants and blackberries rise first, followed by notes of licorice, violets, graphite and pencil shavings, all wrapped in subtle, high-quality oak spice.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and enveloping yet remarkably graceful, with a seamless texture and a sense of effortless completeness. Dark berry fruit is framed by perfectly integrated, silky tannins, delivering controlled richness rather than excess. Hints of cassis, blackberry compote, violets, tobacco leaf and cedar unfold with time in the glass, leading to a long, fleshy, and persistent finish. The balance of ripe fruit, fine structure and bright precision suggests outstanding aging potential: it will drink beautifully from around 2030 and continue to evolve for at least two to three decades, offering a very broad and rewarding drinking window.
Production
The 2022 vintage of Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a classic Pauillac blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, sourced from the estate’s prime gravelly soils overlooking the Gironde estuary. These deep gravel mounds, mixed with sand and clay, provide superb drainage and help Cabernet achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness and aromatic lift. The fruit is harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine berries make it into the grand vin. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing gentle extraction of colour, tannin and aroma to preserve the estate’s trademark elegance. The wine is then matured for about 18 months in French oak barriques, two-thirds of which are new, a slightly longer élevage than in previous years that enhances complexity, integration and length without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a refined yet powerful Pauillac that shines alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison, duck breast, and richly sauced dishes like beef Wellington or braised short ribs. It also pairs superbly with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and polished structure. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up fully; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful splash into a carafe just before serving will be enough to release its layered bouquet.
Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most esteemed estates, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Located just south of Château Latour, the property has long been celebrated for producing wines that combine Pauillac’s classic structure and depth with an especially seductive, velvety elegance—often described as almost Saint-Julien in their finesse. Over the years, significant investment in the vineyards and cellar has elevated quality to consistently top-tier status, and recent vintages have reinforced its reputation as a true ‘super second’ of Bordeaux. The 2022 continues this trajectory, standing as a benchmark wine for the château and one of the standout successes of the vintage on the left bank.
