Description

Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2021 is a beautifully classical Pauillac that captures the elegance and finesse of this historic Second Growth estate. In a cooler, more restrained vintage, Comtesse has crafted a wine that is fragrant, precise and effortlessly refined rather than showy. With production at only about a quarter of a normal year, this 2021 is both a rarity and one of the standout successes of the vintage in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pichon Comtesse shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple hue with a striking clarity that hints at its precision and freshness. The nose flows from the glass with layered aromas of blackberry and mint-laced blackcurrant, interwoven with notes of violet, lavender, rose petals and a refined graphite/cedar pencil character that is so typical of great Pauillac. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky and impeccably polished, with a fleshy core of dark berry fruit wrapped in ripe, lively acidity. The tannins are fine-grained and sweet, almost powdery in texture, giving structure without any harshness. Subtle florals, hints of spice and a savoury graphite nuance carry through into a gently structured, long and harmonious finish. This is a vintage that will offer a broad drinking window: approachable in its youth after a few years of cellaring for integration, yet capable of evolving gracefully for 15–25 years in a good cellar, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande lies on the famed gravel terraces of Pauillac, just inland from the Gironde estuary, where deep beds of well-drained Garonne gravel over limestone and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding nuance and texture. The 2021 vintage, cooler and more classic in style, demanded meticulous work in the vineyard, including strict selection and careful canopy management to achieve full phenolic ripeness. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, then sorted rigorously before vinification. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, allowing the oak to frame rather than dominate the pure, aromatic fruit and to build the wine’s silky structure and aging potential.

Food & Serving
This refined Pauillac is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast rack of lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte, beef Wellington, or venison with a red wine and berry reduction. It also pairs beautifully with duck breast, truffled poultry, and hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the aromatics to unfold. For younger bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; mature bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment while preserving fragile aromatics.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most revered estates, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Often affectionately referred to simply as “Pichon Comtesse,” the château has long been celebrated for crafting some of the most sensual and elegant wines of the appellation, showing a distinctive, almost Margaux-like grace within a Pauillac frame. Over the decades, under dedicated ownership and significant investment in both vineyard and cellar, the estate has cemented its reputation as a reference point on the Left Bank. Its wines regularly rival those of the First Growths in critical acclaim, and in recent years Pichon Comtesse has been widely recognized as one of the most consistently outstanding properties in Bordeaux, blending tradition with a modern precision that shines through in vintages like 2021.
