Description
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2019 is a standout Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most admired Second Growth estates. Silky yet powerful, it captures the elegance and precision that have come to define the modern style of ‘La Comtesse’. Widely hailed as one of the great wines of this excellent vintage, it marks a new high point in the estate’s long and distinguished history.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Pichon Comtesse shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue with an intense, almost opaque core. The nose is wonderfully complex and layered: wild dark berries, cassis and ripe plums are interwoven with notes of tobacco leaf, warm earth, graphite, hints of smoldering embers, and delicate floral nuances of violets and rose petals.
On the palate, this is full-bodied yet effortlessly refined, with a velvety, seamless texture that glides across the mouth. A broad, generous attack leads into a multi-dimensional core of lively, juicy black and red fruit, supported by ultra-fine tannins and a precise line of fresh acidity. Subtle tones of cedar, spice and mineral-laced earth build toward a long, complete and satisfying finish. Still youthful, it has the structure and balance to age beautifully for at least 20–30 years, developing even more aromatic complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is sourced from prime gravelly terraces in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel over clay provides excellent drainage, heat retention and optimal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its classic Bordeaux companions. The estate practices meticulous vineyard management, with careful plot-by-plot work and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and finesse. In the cellar, grapes are sorted rigorously before undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation in vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to build structure, polish the tannins and integrate the wine’s complex aromatic profile, while always preserving its hallmark elegance.
Food & Serving
This Pauillac is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes like truffled potato gratin, mushroom ragout, or mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). For current drinking, decant 1–2 hours in advance to allow the bouquet to unfurl fully; as it matures, a gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Classification. Located in Pauillac, but with some vineyards extending into Saint-Julien, it has long been famed for producing wines of remarkable finesse, often described as the most seductive and ‘feminine’ of the great Pauillacs. Under the stewardship of recent decades and the leadership of Nicolas Glumineau, the château has undergone a qualitative renaissance, with major investments in vineyard and cellar. Today, Pichon Comtesse is widely regarded as operating at, or even above, First Growth level in many vintages, and the 2019 is often cited as emblematic of this new golden age.
