Description

Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2014 is a beautifully poised expression of Pauillac, showcasing the estate’s signature combination of power, finesse, and sensual texture. This Second Growth from the Médoc marries classic Left Bank structure with the generous, velvety charm that has made “Pichon Comtesse” one of Bordeaux’s most beloved names. The 2014 vintage stands out for its precision, freshness, and remarkable aging potential, already offering great pleasure while clearly built for the long haul.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande presents a deep, garnet-ruby color with a vibrant rim, hinting at both concentration and energy. The bouquet is expressive yet refined, opening with vivid notes of blackberry and blackcurrant intertwined with cedarwood, crushed flint, and a distinct graphite minerality. Subtle hints of cigar box, violets, and a touch of spice emerge with air, adding layers of complexity without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, this is a medium to medium-plus-bodied Pauillac with silky, polished tannins and a beautifully harmonious texture. The Merlot component brings a characteristic fleshiness and round, almost velvety mid-palate, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc provide backbone, freshness, and linear structure. Flavors of dark berries, plum, and black cherry are supported by notes of tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, and a saline, mineral edge that carries through to the long, persistent finish. Still youthful, the 2014 has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years from vintage, gaining further complexity, tertiary notes, and nuance with bottle age.

Production
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande lies on the great gravelly terraces of Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary. The vineyards are rooted in deep Garonne gravels mixed with sand and clay, a classic Left Bank terroir that naturally limits yields and promotes perfect drainage, leading to small, concentrated berries with thick skins and pronounced aromatic intensity. The estate is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Harvest is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of bunches. In the cellar, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and precision. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for around 18–20 months, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine to gain further complexity, while still retaining the estate’s hallmark elegance and freshness.

Food & Serving
This 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a natural companion to refined, richly flavored dishes. Classic pairings include roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, venison, or duck breast, as well as game birds and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or mature cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the bouquet open and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will usually suffice.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Classification. Located in Pauillac, just across the road from Château Latour, the property has long been admired for producing wines that combine the authority and structure of Pauillac with an almost Médoc-meets-Pomerol suppleness and charm. Historically associated with the de Pichon-Longueville family and later the dynamic stewardship of May de Lencquesaing, the estate has, over decades, cemented its reputation as one of the most sought-after names on the Left Bank. Today, under the ownership of the Rouzaud family (Louis Roederer), Pichon Comtesse continues to refine its viticulture and winemaking, consistently earning high critical acclaim and maintaining its status as one of the benchmark properties of the region.
