Description
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2011 in magnum format captures the elegance and finesse that have made this Pauillac château one of Bordeaux’s most admired addresses. The 2011 vintage offers a beautifully approachable style, with a classic cassis-driven profile wrapped in silken tannins. In a generous 1.5L bottle, this is a wine designed to evolve gracefully and to shine at the table or in the cellar over the coming decade and beyond.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Comtesse de Lalande shows a deep dark ruby to plum hue, with a vibrant rim that hints at both youth and refinement. The nose is immediately inviting, offering ripe black cherries, red and blackcurrants, and a subtle floral lift, interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, and a touch of fine spice from barrel aging. There’s an elegance to the aromatics that leans toward St-Julien in style, with emphasis on perfume and precision rather than sheer power.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a refined texture and polished tannins. The core of fruit is dominated by blackcurrant, morello cherry, and ripe plum, underlined by hints of pencil shavings, cocoa, and a gentle earthy minerality. Fresh acidity keeps everything lively, while the finish is long, pure, and graceful rather than massive. In magnum, the 2011 has excellent aging potential: it is already drinking well but should continue to develop additional complexity and tertiary notes—leather, cigar box, truffle—over the next 10–15 years, and likely longer under proper cellaring.
Production
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande sits on prime left-bank gravel soils in Pauillac, with deep layers of gravel over sand and clay that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. The estate’s parcels border some of the most illustrious vineyards of the Médoc, and the maritime influence of the Gironde estuary helps to moderate temperatures and promote even ripening. Grapes are harvested by hand, with careful selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only the best fruit from the 2011 vintage made it into the grand vin. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which contribute aromatic complexity and texture. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a significant proportion of which are new), where the wine gains its subtle spice, structure, and ability to age, before being bottled—and in this case, presented in the slower-evolving magnum format.
Food & Serving
This 2011 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or venison with red wine jus. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes—wild mushrooms, truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. In its current stage of evolution, decanting for about 1–2 hours is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially in magnum, where wines typically develop more slowly.
Producer
Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has long been regarded as one of Pauillac’s most distinguished and soulful estates. Often affectionately referred to simply as “Pichon Lalande,” the property is known for crafting wines that combine Pauillac’s hallmark structure and graphite-tinged power with a uniquely silky, almost sensual elegance. Over the years, the château has invested heavily in vineyard management and winery upgrades, further sharpening its quality and consistency. Its wines are frequently mentioned among the top performers of the Médoc, and the estate enjoys a reputation for producing wines that are both collectible and wonderfully drinkable—true benchmarks for refined left-bank Bordeaux.
