Description

Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2010 is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most beloved Second Growth estates. This deep, garnet-colored red marries power and precision with an almost seductive elegance, showing why 2010 is regarded as one of the great modern vintages. It’s a cellar-worthy classic that will appeal to serious collectors and Bordeaux enthusiasts alike. The estate’s hallmark style—often described as the most ‘feminine’ of the Pauillac grandes maisons—shines here in the wine’s poise, perfume, and silk-like texture. Crafted from predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it delivers the structure typical of Pauillac yet retains a refined, almost velvety charm. Classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, Pichon Comtesse has long been considered one of the finest and most consistent performers on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande shows a deep, intense garnet core with just a hint of evolution at the rim—still vibrant and youthful for its age. The nose opens with warm blackcurrant and ripe blueberry tart, followed by kirsch and dark plum. Layers of cedarwood, pencil shavings, charcoal, and cured charcuterie add classic Pauillac complexity, while faint notes of wild thyme and dried flowers bring a lifted, aromatic edge. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with real concentration and energy. The dark berry fruit is pure and finely etched, supported by a lively, fresh acidity that gives the wine tension and precision. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing a solid backbone without feeling harsh. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and blueberry mingle with tobacco leaf, graphite, and subtle spice, leading to a long, persistent finish marked by minerality and savory depth. The 2010 vintage has excellent aging potential; this wine is entering a beautiful drinking window but will continue to develop further complexity and nuance over the next 10–20 years, and likely beyond under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande’s vineyards lie on the gravelly terraces of Pauillac, just inland from the Gironde estuary, where deep gravel, sand, and clay soils provide perfect drainage and stress for Cabernet Sauvignon. The maritime climate, moderated by the river, allows for slow, even ripening, particularly favorable in a superb vintage like 2010. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest berries make it into the grand vin. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel or wooden vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, allowing it to develop its signature balance of structure, complexity, and silky texture before bottling.

Food & Serving
This 2010 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a natural partner for classic French and refined meat dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or venison with wild herbs and mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended at this stage to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, often simply called Pichon Comtesse, is one of Pauillac’s most revered estates, located just across the road from Château Latour. With roots dating back to the late 17th century, it achieved Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) status in the historic 1855 Classification, and has since built a reputation for producing some of the Left Bank’s most refined and age-worthy wines. Known for its distinctive style that combines the structure of Pauillac with an almost Margaux-like elegance, Pichon Comtesse has been instrumental in elevating the region’s global reputation. Under visionary ownership and investment over recent decades, the château has consistently garnered critical acclaim, with vintages like 2010 widely considered among the standout wines of their generation.
