Description
Pichon Longueville Baron 2010 is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most revered Second Growth estates. This is a powerful yet precise red that captures the generous, structured character of the outstanding 2010 vintage. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines concentration, elegance and impressive aging potential in a classic left-bank style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Pichon-Longueville Baron shows a deep garnet core with just a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting its gradual evolution. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with baked black cherries, plum compote and crème de cassis, followed by notes of cedar chest, cigar box, pencil shavings, dried herbs and a touch of graphite and violets.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with a firm backbone of fine-grained, chalky tannins and vibrant, well-integrated acidity. Dense blackcurrant, black cherry and dark plum are supported by flavors of licorice, tobacco leaf, cocoa and subtle spice from high-quality oak. The finish is long, precise and very pure, with lingering black fruit and cedar. While already beautifully expressive, this 2010 has the structure to evolve gracefully for many more years; well-stored bottles can comfortably age 20–30 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and nuance.
Production
Pichon Longueville Baron lies in the heart of Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde, its vineyards rooted in deep gravel soils over clay that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2010 vintage was marked by ideal conditions for slow, even ripening, producing small, concentrated berries with excellent tannin maturity. Grapes are meticulously sorted at harvest, then vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vats to capture the character of each plot. The grand vin is blended predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties, and aged in French oak barriques (a high proportion new) for around 18–20 months, with careful racking and tasting throughout to refine its structure and polish the tannins.
Food & Serving
This is a classic, structured Pauillac that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, venison, duck breast, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to preserve their more delicate, mature aromas.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates, classified as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Classification. Situated in Pauillac, directly across the road from Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and close to Latour, it has long been regarded as a reference point for powerful, age-worthy Médoc Cabernet. The property’s history dates back to the late 17th century, and under modern stewardship it has benefitted from significant investment in the vineyards and cellars, leading to a sustained run of exceptional vintages. Pichon Baron is widely celebrated for combining depth, structure and finesse, and the 2010 is considered one of the standout wines of the château’s contemporary era.
