Description

Pichon-Longueville Baron 2009 is a distinguished Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Second Growth estates. From the celebrated 2009 vintage, it delivers a classic left-bank profile with refined structure and beautifully judged ripeness. This cuvée reflects the estate’s hallmark style—elegant, poised and built to age—while showcasing the generosity of an outstanding year in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2009 Pauillac shows a deep, shimmering garnet core with just a hint of brick at the rim, signaling its graceful evolution. The nose is distinctly classical: think pencil shavings and cigar box over layers of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, supported by touches of graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and a whisper of dried violets. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm, well-knit structure that has tightened attractively over time. The black fruit is pure and focused rather than opulent—cassis, blackberry and dark cherry—wrapped in fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Subtle notes of cocoa, leather and savory herbs emerge with air, giving a restrained, “conservative for the vintage” character that will appeal to lovers of traditional Pauillac. While already highly enjoyable now, especially with a short decant, it still has the substance to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years, depending on storage.

Production
Sourced from the gravel-rich vineyards of Pauillac in the Médoc, this wine benefits from the classic terroir that has made the appellation famous: deep gravel soils over sand and clay, providing excellent drainage and encouraging deep root systems. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, largely by hand to ensure careful selection of the healthiest bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic finesse, followed by aging in French oak barrels (with a portion new), which imparts subtle notes of spice and cedar while allowing the wine’s structure and Pauillac character to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This 2009 Pauillac is a natural partner for classic French and refined meat dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte with herb butter, duck breast, or a slow-braised beef stew. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-infused dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. A decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended at this stage to soften the tannins, open up the bouquet and showcase the wine’s layered, savory complexity.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is one of the great historic estates of Pauillac, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. With origins dating back to the late 17th century, the château has long been recognized for producing Cabernet Sauvignon–driven wines of power, depth and age-worthiness. Situated on prime gravelly soils just south of Château Latour, Pichon Baron plays a key role in defining the benchmark style of Pauillac: structured, elegant and built for longevity. Over the past decades, significant investment in the vineyards and cellar has elevated quality even further, and the estate is consistently lauded by critics for the precision and reliability of both its grand vin and second wines from top vintages like 2009.
