Description

Château Pichon Baron is one of Pauillac’s most respected names, producing a classically styled Bordeaux with depth, precision, and remarkable aging potential. As a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from the historic 1855 classification, it stands out for its powerful Cabernet-led structure and unmistakable Left Bank character.

Tasting Notes
In youth, Pichon Baron 2023 is expected to show a deep ruby-purple color with impressive concentration. The nose typically leans toward blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, violet, and subtle tobacco, with the new oak bringing hints of spice and dark cocoa. On the palate, the wine is usually full-bodied and tightly structured, with firm yet refined tannins, fresh acidity, and a core of dark fruit layered with minerality and savory complexity. It is built for the cellar and should evolve beautifully over time, often improving for 15 to 30 years or more depending on storage conditions.

Production
Pichon Baron’s vineyards in Pauillac are rooted in the gravelly soils of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, which are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and contribute to the wine’s power, freshness, and precision. The estate’s terroir helps produce small, concentrated berries, while careful harvesting and parcel selection ensure only the best fruit is used. Vinification is conducted with a focus on purity, structure, and balance, typically followed by aging in French oak to refine the tannins and deepen complexity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for classic meat dishes such as ribeye steak, lamb rack, beef Wellington, game, and slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, aged hard cheeses, and rich mushroom-based recipes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.

Producer
Château Pichon Baron has a long and prestigious history in Pauillac, with roots that go back centuries and a reputation built on producing some of the Médoc’s most structured and age-worthy wines. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it remains one of the benchmark estates of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The château is widely admired for its consistency, elegance, and ability to deliver wines of great distinction vintage after vintage.
