Description
Château Pichon Baron 2018 is a classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most esteemed estates, offering the depth, structure, and precision that have made the property a benchmark for the Left Bank. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé, it combines noble Cabernet Sauvignon-led power with refined balance and impressive aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 shows a deep, concentrated ruby-purple hue. The nose is layered and expressive, with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and subtle floral notes, all framed by finely judged oak.
On the palate, it is rich and structured, with a core of dark fruit supported by firm yet polished tannins and vibrant freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon provides drive and definition, while Merlot and the supporting varieties add roundness and complexity. This is a wine built for the cellar and can evolve beautifully over many years, gaining further nuance and elegance with time.
Production
Pichon Baron is based in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where the gravelly terroir is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard’s well-drained soils and proximity to the Gironde help moderate ripening, contributing to the wine’s precision and power. The 2018 vintage was produced from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified with care to preserve concentration, freshness, and the estate’s signature structure.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, duck breast, or mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours when young to allow the wine to open fully and soften its tannins.
Producer
Château Pichon Baron is one of the historic estates of Pauillac and has long held a leading position in Bordeaux’s Left Bank hierarchy. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it is known for producing wines of depth, longevity, and aristocratic style. Today, the estate remains highly regarded for its consistency and excellence, with a reputation built on some of the region’s most elegant and ageworthy wines.
