Description
Pétrus 1999 is one of Bordeaux’s most coveted cult wines, a rare 100% Merlot from Pomerol that sits firmly on many wine lovers’ bucket lists. Produced in extremely limited quantities, it combines the plush depth and velvet texture that define the estate with the elegance and poise that made Pétrus legendary.
Tasting Notes
The 1999 vintage shows a dense, nearly opaque ruby-purple core, with a mature brightness at the rim. On the nose, it opens with sweet black cherry, mulberry, and layers of truffle, earth, and subtle spice, all framed by remarkable purity.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and deeply textured, yet refined rather than heavy, with low acidity, sweet tannins, and a silky, almost seamless mouthfeel. Robert Parker noted its intensity and finesse in a more evolved style, and it remains a wine with excellent longevity, capable of developing gracefully for many years.
Production
Pétrus is sourced from Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay-rich soils and the estate’s exceptional terroir help Merlot achieve extraordinary concentration and finesse. The vineyard is planted entirely to Merlot, including very old vines, and harvesting is carried out with meticulous care to preserve fruit quality. Vinification focuses on precision and purity, resulting in a wine that is powerful yet impeccably polished.
Food & Serving
Best served with refined dishes that can match its richness, such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or truffle-based dishes. It should be served at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended if opening now, ideally for 1–2 hours, to allow the wine’s aromatic depth to unfold fully.
Producer
Château Pétrus, based in Pomerol, has become one of the most famous estates in the world despite its relatively short rise to prominence. Its modern reputation was built in the mid-20th century, largely through the influence of Jean-Pierre Moueix and later his son Christian Moueix, who helped elevate it to cult status. Today, Pétrus is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s greatest names, known for its singular focus, tiny production, and remarkable consistency.
