Description

Pétrus is one of Bordeaux’s most coveted wines, a true cult label from Pomerol that has earned legendary status through rarity, precision, and consistently exceptional quality. Made entirely from Merlot and produced in tiny quantities, it stands apart from the famed First Growths of the Left Bank while remaining firmly in the upper echelon of the world’s greatest wines. Its rise to fame in the mid-20th century, driven by the Moueix family, turned Pétrus into a name that wine lovers place at the very top of their bucket lists.

Tasting Notes
Pétrus 1994 typically shows a deep garnet to ruby color with remarkable concentration for the vintage. On the nose, it offers layers of ripe plum, black cherry, blackberry, truffle, earth, cedar, and subtle spice, with the kind of aromatic depth that slowly unfolds in the glass. On the palate, it is polished and full-bodied, with silky tannins, refined Merlot richness, and a long, savory finish. Depending on bottle condition and storage, the 1994 vintage can still deliver impressive complexity and secondary notes, and it has the structure to age gracefully for many years more in a proper cellar.

Production
Pétrus comes from the prized clay-rich soils of Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, a terroir especially well suited to Merlot, which makes up the entire vineyard blend. Old vines, meticulous hand harvesting, and extremely limited yields are central to the estate’s production philosophy, ensuring outstanding concentration and purity of fruit. Vinification is carried out with an emphasis on precision and balance, preserving the wine’s signature depth, texture, and longevity.

Food & Serving
Serve Pétrus 1994 at around 16–18°C, ideally after gentle decanting if the bottle is in good condition and the wine appears closed or sedimented. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, truffled mushroom dishes, or fine game, where the wine’s velvety texture and earthy complexity can shine without being overwhelmed.

Producer
Château Pétrus is one of the most famous estates in Bordeaux and a benchmark name in Pomerol. Although its global reputation is relatively young compared with some historic Left Bank châteaux, the estate’s ascent was transformed in the 1950s under Jean-Pierre Moueix and later further elevated by Christian Moueix. Today, Pétrus is renowned for producing one of the world’s most sought-after Merlot-based wines, with a reputation built on scarcity, craftsmanship, and extraordinary consistency.
