Description
Petrolo Torrione 2023 is a characterful Tuscan red that captures the estate’s identity in a single bottle. First conceived in 1988 with the guidance of legendary consultant Giulio Gambelli, it brings together Petrolo’s best vineyards and reflects the estate’s long-standing pursuit of top-quality wine.
Tasting Notes
Torrione 2023 is expected to show a vivid ruby colour with the freshness and energy typical of a youthful Tuscan red. Aromatically, it should offer layers of ripe red cherry, plum, violet, and Mediterranean herbs, alongside subtle notes of spice and cedar from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot components.
On the palate, Sangiovese leads with bright acidity and fine tannins, while Merlot adds mid-palate richness and Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure and a darker-fruited edge. The result is a balanced, expressive wine with good depth and the potential to evolve gracefully over the next few years.
Production
Torrione is made from a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Petrolo’s various vineyards, including Bòggina, Galatrona, Campo Lusso, and other historic Sangiovese sites on the estate. This blend reflects both the terroir of Petrolo and the classic Tuscan tradition of complementing Sangiovese with French varieties.
The 2023 vintage was crafted to preserve freshness, precision, and vineyard character, with vinification focused on careful extraction and balance rather than heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as grilled steak, roasted lamb, pasta with ragù, or mushroom risotto. It also works well with aged pecorino and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C, and decanting for about 30 minutes is recommended if drinking young.
Producer
Petrolo is one of Tuscany’s most respected estates, known for its thoughtful approach to site expression and its commitment to producing wines of distinction. Under the direction of Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust, the estate embraced a new era in the late 1980s, with Torrione becoming one of its defining wines. Today, Petrolo is widely admired for both its heritage and its consistent critical acclaim.
