Peter Michael La Carrière Chardonnay 2021

Peter Michael La Carrière Chardonnay 2021 is a top-tier single-vineyard Chardonnay from one of California’s most celebrated estates, grown on the estate’s own steep, stone-rich hillside site at around 500 meters elevation. The name “La Carrière” means “the quarry,” a fitting nod to the intensely rocky soils that give this wine its striking mineral drive, depth, and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the polished brightness and concentration you’d expect from a great cool-climate Chardonnay, with a layered, luminous profile. The nose is immediately expressive, unfolding with mandarin, dried apricot, and warm pineapple, backed by brioche, acacia honey, hazelnut, and a lift of grapefruit. On the palate, it is rich yet impeccably balanced, offering Williams pear, citrus, white flowers, almonds, vanilla, and a pronounced stony minerality that runs through the wine from start to finish. 12 months on lees have added texture and complexity, while the wine’s structure suggests excellent aging potential; it is delicious now, but should continue to evolve gracefully for at least the next 10 years.

Production
La Carrière comes from Peter Michael’s estate vineyard in California, planted on an exceptionally steep slope at high altitude where rocky soils ensure excellent drainage and naturally limit vigor. These conditions, combined with the site’s ideal exposure and climate, help produce a Chardonnay with intensity, purity, and a distinctive mineral character. Winemaker Nicolas Morlet crafts the wine with 12 months of lees aging to build breadth, texture, and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for refined dishes such as roast or butter-poached lobster, grilled scallops, roast chicken with herbs, truffle risotto, or creamy pasta with mushrooms. Serve it cool, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if opening it young to help the wine reveal its full aromatic complexity.
