Description

Peter Lauer Saar Riesling 2021 Magnum is a dry Riesling from the Mosel's Saar, shaped by grey Devonian slate and bottled in 1500 ml for long, clear ageing. It has the Lauer mix of lemon, peach and wet gravel. The large format suits the wine’s 2021 tension and its clean, stony finish.

About the Wine
The vines for Peter Lauer Saar Riesling 2021 Magnum grow in the Saar district of the Mosel on slate and grey Devonian slate. That detail matters here, since this bottle carries a firm wet-gravel note from the first pour. The estate works sustainably, and the 2021 vintage gives the fruit a cool, direct shape. Lemon and peach lead the aroma, then apricot and white pepper add a sharper Saar accent. The 1500 ml format gives this dry Riesling a calm pace in bottle. In the cellar, this Peter Lauer Riesling was aged in traditional large oak fuders of around 1,000 litres. These casks are part of the Lauer language, and they build texture rather than obvious oak flavour. The wine sits at 13% alcohol, so the palate feels broad for Saar Riesling. The finish remains tight and stony, with a dry line that reaches past the fruit. The flavour sits on lemon peel, peach skin, apricot stone and a cool streak of wet gravel.

Tasting Notes
Pale straw-yellow in the glass, this 2021 Peter Lauer Saar Riesling opens with lemon zest, white peach and ripe apricot, followed by the wet-gravel scent that marks this slate-grown Saar wine. The palate has more weight than the colour suggests, with 13% alcohol giving breadth and the dry finish keeping the shape crisp. White pepper appears near the end, adding a fine bite to the peach and citrus fruit. The magnum format makes the wine feel especially composed, with a long mineral finish that stretches out slowly after each sip. Drink 2024-2040.

Food Pairing
Pour this dry Mosel Riesling with fish and seafood that carry salt, butter or gentle smoke. It is excellent with grilled sea bass, scallops in lemon butter or prawns with garlic and parsley. For a regional direction, serve it with Mosel trout with almonds and brown butter, where the wine’s lemon and wet-stone notes meet the sweet flesh of the fish. The white pepper edge also suits sushi with ginger, crab salad or a simple plate of oysters. In magnum, it has the stamina for a long table with several small seafood courses.

Producer
Peter Lauer is based in Ayl on the Saar, and the estate is closely tied to the old German habit of naming wines by cask number. Those “Fass” references are more than cellar shorthand here, since they point to separate lots with their own place and personality. This gives Lauer bottles a very direct identity, even before the cork is pulled. The Saar voice of the estate is lean in outline and full of detail, with citrus, herbs, stone and a fine pepper note appearing across many wines. Large old fuders remain central to the cellar, and they give wines like this 2021 dry Riesling a quiet grip rather than a glossy oak signature. Florian Lauer has also kept the estate focused on Riesling from Ayl and the surrounding Saar slopes, so the wines often feel like a close reading of one small corner of the Mosel.
