Description
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, one of Bordeaux’s most historic and prestigious estates. Produced in Pessac-Léognan, it offers a more approachable expression of the château’s distinctive gravel-soil terroir while retaining the estate’s elegance, depth and remarkable pedigree. The 2021 vintage is particularly suited to lovers of refined, classically styled Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2021 displays a deep ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. The nose combines ripe red and dark berries with notes of plum, violet, cedar, tobacco and subtly smoky, gravelly nuances. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with polished tannins, fresh acidity and flavours of blackcurrant, cherry and blackberry supported by well-integrated oak. The finish is refined and persistent, with an earthy mineral character typical of Pessac-Léognan.
The 2021 vintage is marked by freshness and balance rather than sheer power, making this wine enjoyable with some bottle age while still rewarding patience. It can be approached from around 2025, but should develop greater complexity over the following decade and remain expressive for approximately 10–15 years under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The wine comes from Château Haut-Brion’s vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, where deep gravelly soils over clay and sand provide excellent drainage and encourage slow, even ripening. The blend is based on the traditional Bordeaux varieties grown at the estate, notably Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contributing depending on the vintage. Grapes are carefully selected and vinified parcel by parcel at the château, followed by maturation in oak barrels to add structure and complexity while preserving the wine’s freshness and terroir character.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest briefly at room temperature. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and other game, as well as duck, mushrooms, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses. In its youth, decanting for around 30–60 minutes can help open the wine; older bottles should be decanted gently and only shortly before serving to remove any sediment without losing aromatic nuance.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is the oldest of Bordeaux’s classified First Growths, with a history stretching back to the 16th century. Located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation just south of Bordeaux, it is renowned for producing wines of exceptional elegance, aromatic complexity and longevity. Haut-Brion was included in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc despite being situated outside the Médoc, underlining its extraordinary reputation. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion takes its name from Clarence Dillon, the American financier whose family acquired the estate in 1935.
