Description
Le Clarence de Château Haut-Brion is the second wine of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, offering a more approachable expression of the terroir behind Château Haut-Brion. Produced in Pessac-Léognan, it carries the heritage of a château often regarded as Bordeaux’s oldest great classified growth and one of the world’s earliest luxury wine brands.
Tasting Notes
The 2018 vintage shows a deep ruby-purple colour. Its aromatic profile combines ripe blackcurrants, blackberry and plum with classic Pessac-Léognan nuances of graphite, cigar box, cedar and subtle smoky spice. On the palate, it is generous and polished, with concentrated dark fruit, supple tannins and a fresh mineral lift that keeps the wine balanced and energetic.
Although approachable in its youth after some aeration, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2018 has the structure to develop gracefully over the next 10–15 years. With bottle age, expect greater complexity, including tobacco, leather, truffle and savoury earthy notes.
Production
The wine comes from Haut-Brion’s gravel-rich vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, where well-draining Günzian gravel over clay and sand helps produce ripe fruit with depth, perfume and mineral character. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the fruit, tannins and discreet smoky character to integrate while preserving the estate’s distinctive freshness and elegance.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion pairs especially well with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck, venison and other richly flavoured dishes, as well as mushroom-based recipes and mature hard cheeses. Decant for around 1–2 hours when serving young; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted shortly before serving to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion has a history stretching back more than five centuries and occupies a unique place in Bordeaux’s wine heritage. It was already celebrated internationally in the 17th century and was named a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, despite being located in what is now Pessac-Léognan rather than the Médoc. Today, the estate remains one of the region’s benchmarks, renowned for wines that combine richness, elegance, longevity and a distinctive smoky-mineral signature.
