Description
Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque Brut Rosé 1988 is a rare vintage Champagne from one of the house’s most celebrated cuvées, presented in its instantly recognisable anemone-decorated bottle. After more than three decades of bottle ageing, this mature rosé offers the opportunity to explore the depth and complexity that can develop in a carefully preserved vintage Champagne. As with any wine of this age, provenance and storage conditions are especially important.
Tasting Notes
With age, the wine may show a delicate salmon, copper or amber-pink hue, depending on its storage history. The nose is likely to reveal evolved aromas of dried red berries, wild strawberry, rose petals and citrus peel, complemented by brioche, toasted almond, honey and subtle earthy notes.
On the palate, expect a mature and refined expression with softened mousse, savoury complexity and lingering flavours of red fruit, pastry, dried citrus and mineral tones. The 1988 vintage is known for producing wines with excellent structure and ageing potential, although the current condition of this bottle will depend greatly on its cellaring. Serve soon after opening to enjoy its freshness and nuance.
Production
Belle Époque Brut Rosé is produced in Champagne using the traditional method, with a second fermentation in bottle followed by extended lees ageing. The cuvée reflects Perrier-Jouët’s elegant house style, combining Chardonnay-led finesse with the colour, fruit and structure associated with red Champagne grapes. Grapes for vintage Champagne are harvested by hand, and the 1988 vintage designation indicates that the wine is made from a single harvest rather than a blend of multiple years. Specific vineyard and cellar details for this individual bottle are not available.
Food & Serving
This mature rosé Champagne is best served lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing its developed aromas to show without muting its complexity. It pairs beautifully with lobster, langoustine, smoked salmon, roast poultry, duck breast and dishes featuring wild mushrooms. It can also complement aged cheeses and delicate fruit-based desserts. Decanting is generally not recommended for an older Champagne, as extended exposure to air may cause the mousse to fade; open gently and pour carefully, preferably into white wine glasses rather than narrow flutes.
Producer
Founded in Épernay in 1811, Perrier-Jouët has become one of Champagne’s most distinctive houses, renowned for its elegant, floral style and strong connection to Chardonnay. Belle Époque was first introduced in the 1960s and quickly became the house’s signature prestige cuvée, famous for its Art Nouveau bottle decorated with white Japanese anemones. Perrier-Jouët remains one of the region’s best-known producers, with Belle Époque recognised internationally as an emblematic vintage Champagne.
