Description
Perdeberg’s The Dry Land Collection Courageous Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2025 showcases the distinctive character of South Africa’s Agter Paarl, where dry-farmed vines produce naturally concentrated fruit. Barrel fermentation adds texture and gentle complexity to Chenin Blanc’s bright varietal character, creating a refined white wine with both freshness and depth. Perdeberg has been making wine since 1941 and remains closely connected to the region’s dryland heritage.
Tasting Notes
Bright straw-gold in appearance, this Chenin Blanc offers an expressive nose of ripe pear, yellow apple and citrus, complemented by subtle vanilla, toast and lightly nutty nuances from barrel fermentation. The palate is rounded and textured, balancing generous stone-fruit flavours with refreshing acidity and a gently creamy finish.
Its concentration and balanced structure make it enjoyable now, while careful cellaring for a few years should allow further development of honeyed, nutty and savoury notes. Best appreciated while the wine’s fruit and freshness remain vibrant.
Production
The grapes are sourced from dry-farmed vineyards in Agter Paarl, between Malmesbury and Durbanville, where warm, dry conditions and the area’s distinctive soils help produce naturally focused fruit. Chenin Blanc is harvested at optimum ripeness before being fermented in barrels, allowing the wine to develop greater texture and subtle oak complexity while preserving its freshness. Perdeberg combines traditional winemaking knowledge with modern technology and sustainable vineyard practices, including the use of infrared aerial imagery to help monitor and protect its vines.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for roasted or grilled chicken, pork, creamy pasta, seafood, sushi and mildly spiced Asian dishes. It also works well with mature cheeses and dishes featuring roasted vegetables or lightly sweet sauces. Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, though a short period of aeration in a carafe can help reveal the wine’s texture and barrel-derived aromas.
Producer
Founded in 1941, Perdeberg began when Jan Rossouw brought local farmers together with the ambition of producing their own wine rather than simply selling their grapes. Today, the winery is an established name in the Agter Paarl and is particularly recognised for its dryland wines and its strong association with Chenin Blanc. Its philosophy is built around heritage, innovation, relationships, location, sustainability and expertise, with a continued focus on protecting the vineyards and their natural surroundings.
