Description

Penfolds Grange 2004 is one of Australia’s most iconic red wines: a powerful, age-worthy blend led by Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon. First created by Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert in the 1950s, Grange helped establish Australia’s reputation for producing world-class fine wine and remains the flagship of the Penfolds collection.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in colour, the 2004 vintage opens with concentrated aromas of blackberry, black plum and ripe blueberry, layered with mocha, dark chocolate, liquorice, warm spice and subtle eucalyptus. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, balancing dense fruit with savoury complexity, polished oak and firm, well-integrated tannins. The wine has the concentration and structure expected of Grange, with a long, persistent finish and considerable development potential. It can be enjoyed now after careful decanting, but should continue to evolve gracefully for many years—potentially well into the 2030s and beyond when stored properly.

Production
Grange is crafted from carefully selected South Australian vineyards, with the blend and vineyard sources varying according to vintage conditions. The 2004 wine combines Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested at optimum ripeness before fermentation and maturation in new American oak hogsheads. This traditional Penfolds approach gives the wine its characteristic depth, sweet spice and layered oak complexity while allowing the powerful fruit and tannins to mature over time.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, to preserve freshness and balance. Decant for approximately two to three hours before serving, particularly if opening the bottle now. Its intensity makes it an excellent match for prime rib, roast beef, venison, slow-cooked lamb, truffle-rich dishes and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Founded in Adelaide in 1844, Penfolds is one of Australia’s most historically significant wine producers. The winery’s Grange project, developed by Max Schubert and first made in 1951, became a landmark in Australian winemaking through its distinctive Shiraz-led style, careful multi-vineyard sourcing and long maturation in American oak. Today, Penfolds is internationally recognised for Grange and for a portfolio of benchmark wines from across South Australia.
