Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is dense and deeply coloured, almost opaque, with a strikingly dark core. The nose opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, and violet, followed by layers of coffee, cocoa, vanilla, dried spice, and a subtle smoky oak character. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully layered, offering ripe dark fruit, liquorice, chocolate, and a hint of mint wrapped in firm, well-integrated tannins. Despite its power, the wine remains balanced and refined, with a long, complex finish and outstanding ageing potential over the next 30-40 years.

Production
Penfolds Grange 2005 is crafted from Shiraz sourced across key South Australian regions including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra, with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon added for structure and complexity. The vintage benefited from a cool spring followed by a warm, dry growing season, resulting in grapes of excellent concentration and natural balance. After careful selection of the best fruit, the wine was vinified in the classic Penfolds style and matured for 18 months in new American oak barrels, giving it the signature Grange combination of richness, depth, and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for rich, flavourful dishes such as roasted lamb, slow-braised beef, game, or premium grilled steaks. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and dishes featuring earthy spices or dark sauces. Serve at around 16-18°C and consider decanting for at least 1-2 hours before serving, especially if enjoyed young, to allow the wine to fully open.
