Penfolds Grange 2004

Penfolds Grange 2004 is one of the most admired modern vintages of Australia’s flagship red, showing the power and depth the wine is famous for, but with an unusual layer of elegance and freshness. Crafted mainly from Shiraz with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, it draws fruit from some of South Australia’s finest sites and reflects the uncompromising blending philosophy that has defined Grange since its creation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Grange 2004 is deep, dense and almost opaque, with a dark ruby core that hints at its concentration. The nose is wonderfully complex, opening with ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, plum and blueberry, then unfolding into darker notes of cocoa, roasted coffee, tobacco, vanilla and warm spice from oak. The palate is rich, full-bodied and remarkably silky, delivering layer after layer of black fruit, liquorice and savoury mineral nuances. The tannins are firm yet beautifully integrated, giving the wine both structure and polish. This is a vintage with outstanding aging potential and can continue to evolve gracefully for decades, with a drinking window that comfortably stretches 30 to 40 years from the vintage.

Production
Penfolds Grange 2004 was sourced from top vineyards across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, regions that contribute power, fragrance and structure in equal measure. The 2004 season was long and cool, allowing for slow ripening and excellent phenolic maturity, while a moderate harvest helped preserve freshness and concentration. Following the classic Grange approach, the wine was assembled from the best parcels and matured for 18 months in new American oak to build depth, complexity and the unmistakable Grange signature.

Food & Serving
This is a wine built for equally serious food, and it shines with premium beef, roast lamb, venison, slow-braised short ribs or game dishes with rich sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 2 hours, longer if the bottle has been cellared for many years, to allow the aromas and texture to fully open.
