Penfolds, Coonawarra Bin 169 2018

Penfolds Coonawarra Bin 169 2018 is a refined expression of South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, produced only in exceptional vintages from the region’s celebrated terra rossa soils. Created to showcase the elegance and distinctive regional character of Coonawarra Cabernet, Bin 169 is matured in French oak and offers a more polished, classically structured style than many of Penfolds’ broader South Australian reds.

Tasting Notes
Deep crimson in colour, the 2018 vintage opens with aromas of cassis, blackberry and dark plum, complemented by hints of mint, eucalyptus, cedar and finely integrated French oak. The palate is concentrated yet poised, combining ripe black fruit with dark chocolate, subtle spice and an underlying mineral character. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and length, while refreshing acidity keeps the wine balanced and energetic. It is approachable with decanting now, but has the concentration, structure and balance to develop further in bottle for many years—potentially through the 2030s and beyond under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
The wine comes from Coonawarra, a cool-climate region renowned for its narrow strip of deep red terra rossa soils over limestone. These soils, together with the region’s maritime influence and long, moderate growing season, are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit is carefully selected and harvested at optimum ripeness before fermentation and maturation in French oak, allowing the wine to develop depth while preserving the freshness and distinctive perfume of Coonawarra Cabernet.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. Decant for 30–60 minutes when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic detail. Its structure and savoury depth make it an excellent partner for grilled or braised beef, roast lamb, venison, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
